This book was released on 1994 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During 1989-1992, Canadian wildlife Service (Ontario) collected a total of 1495 eggs from fish-eating colonial birds from 50 colonies throughout the Great Lakes to measure the levels of 86 chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds, and the lipid concentrations present. These data were generated as part of a monitoring program started in 1970 to understand the temporal and spatial trends in environmental contaminant levels in biota of the Great Lakes"--Executive summary.

Download or read book An Atlas of Contaminants in Eggs of Fish eating Colonial Birds of the Great Lakes 1970 1988 written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Great Lakes of Canada and the United States have been a major arena for research and monitoring studies of pollution levels and effects. Today, there is an enormous database on the pollution levels in water, sediment and many trophic levels of the Great Lakes. However, it is often difficult for scientists and the public to easily locate a comprehensive summary of data concerning contamination in any or all of these trophic levels. This atlas provides a summary of the mean concentrations of thirty-nine contaminants and the percent lipid measured in eggs of seven species of fish-eating colonial birds sampled only by the Canadian Wildlife Service throughout the Great Lakes during 1970-1988. There are 4491 data points presented in the atlas; however, this does not include any contaminant data concerning biota in the Great Lakes collected by other organizations and agencies"--Introd., p. 7.

Book Birds of Ontario Habitat Requirements Limiting Factors and Status

Download or read book Birds of Ontario Habitat Requirements Limiting Factors and Status written by Al Sandilands and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volumes in the Birds of Ontario series summarize life history requirements of bird species that are normally part of the ecology of Ontario. This is the second volume in the series and completes the treatment of the nonpasserine bird species occurring in Ontario on a regular basis. Information on habitat, limiting factors, and status is summarized for 83 species in this volume. These topics are covered for the three primary avian seasons: breeding, migration, and winter. Habitat, nest sites, territoriality, site fidelity, annual reproductive effort, habitat loss and degradation, environmental contaminants, and a variety of other topics are covered in the species accounts. Maps depicting breeding and wintering range are presented for most species along with drawings by Ross James. Birds of Ontario is an essential reference source for wildlife biologists, environmental consultants, and planners preparing or reviewing environmental impact statements and environmental assessments. Serious birders will find the volumes of interest as well. Although the books focus on Ontario birds, the information is highly relevant to adjacent provinces and states.

Book Trends in Levels and Effects of Persistent Toxic Substances in the Great Lakes

Download or read book Trends in Levels and Effects of Persistent Toxic Substances in the Great Lakes written by Michael Gilbertson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Are the Great Lakes getting better or worse?' This is the question that the public, scientists and managers are asking the International Joint Commission after a quarter-century of cooperative action by the United States and Canadian governments to clean up the Great Lakes. This volume contains papers from the workshop on Environmental Results, hosted in Windsor, Ontario, by the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board of the International Joint Commission, on September 12 and 13, 1996. The Great Lakes have been through almost a century of severe pollution from the manufacture, use and disposal of chemicals. In the 1960s wildlife biologists started to investigate the outbreaks of reproductive failure in fish-eating birds and ranch mink and to link these to exposure to organochlorine compounds. Human health researchers in the 1980s and 1990s linked growth retardation, behavioral anomalies and deficits in cognitive development with maternal consumption of Great Lakes fish prior to pregnancy. The Great Lakes became the laboratory where the theory of endocrine disruptors was first formulated. Now a group of Great Lakes scientists, hosted by the International Joint Commission, has compiled the story of the trends in the concentrations and effects of persistent toxic substances on wildlife and humans. The technical papers review the suitability of various organisms as indicators, and present the results of long-term monitoring of the concentrations and of the incidence of effects. The evidence shows that there was an enormous improvement in the late 1970s, but that in the late 1990s there are still concentrations of some persistent toxic substances that have stubbornly remained at levels that continue to cause toxicological effects.
