Wherever possible, the original source of the material being pre sented is referenced, together with references to more recent modifications and applications. More accessible reprints and translations of the early papers are also referenced. In this way the reader is provided with the often ignored his torical context together with an orientation to the more recent literature. Any omission of a reference is, of course, not meant to reflect on the quality of its contents. In order to present a wide variety of concepts in one volume, a concise style is used and derivations are presented for only the simpler formulae. Ex tensive derivations and explanatory comments may be found in the original references or in the books listed in the selected bibliography which follows. Following the convention in astrophysics, the C. g. S. (centimeter-gram-second) system of units is used unless otherwise noted. To conserve space, the funda mental constants are not always defined, and unless otherwise noted the fol lowing symbols have the following meaning and value. Symbol Meaning Value 10 c Speed of light in vacuum 2. 997924562(11) x 10 cm S-l h=2nh Planck's constant 6. 626196(50) x 10 - 27 erg s Rationalized Planck's constant 1. 0545919(80) x 10- 27 erg s h=h/2n k Boltzmann's constant 1. 380622(59) x 10 - 16 erg K - 1 4.

Book An Introduction to Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book An Introduction to Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics written by Michael J. Thompson and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction for graduate students and advanced undergraduate students to the field of astrophysical fluid dynamics. Although sometimes ignored, fluid dynamical processes play a central role in virtually all areas of astrophysics. No previous knowledge of fluid dynamics is assumed. After establishing the basic equations of fluid dynamics and the physics relevant to an astrophysical application, a variety of topics in the field are addressed. There is also a chapter introducing the reader to numerical methods. Appendices list useful physical constants and astronomical quantities, and provide handy reference material on Cartesian tensors, vector calculus in polar coordinates, self-adjoint eigenvalue problems and JWKB theory.

Book Astronomy at High Angular Resolution

Download or read book Astronomy at High Angular Resolution written by Henri M. J. Boffin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an essential compendium of astronomical high-resolution techniques. Recent years have seen considerable developments in such techniques, which are critical to advances in many areas of astronomy. As reflected in the book, these techniques can be divided into direct methods, interferometry, and reconstruction methods, and can be applied to a huge variety of astrophysical systems, ranging from planets, single stars and binaries to active galactic nuclei, providing angular resolution in the micro- to tens of milliarcsecond scales. Written by experts in their fields, the chapters cover adaptive optics, aperture masking imaging, spectra disentangling, interferometry, lucky imaging, Roche tomography, imaging with interferometry, interferometry of AGN, AGN reverberation mapping, Doppler- and magnetic imaging of stellar surfaces, Doppler tomography, eclipse mapping, Stokes imaging, and stellar tomography. This book is intended to enable a next generation of astronomers to apply high-resolution techniques. It informs readers on how to achieve the best angular resolution in the visible and near-infrared regimes from diffraction-limited to micro-arcsecond scales.
