Book Soil erosion the greatest challenge for sustainable soil management

Download or read book Soil erosion the greatest challenge for sustainable soil management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite almost a century of research and extension efforts, soil erosion by water, wind and tillage continues to be the greatest threat to soil health and soil ecosystem services in many regions of the world. Our understanding of the physical processes of erosion and the controls on those processes has been firmly established. Nevertheless, some elements remain controversial. It is often these controversial questions that hamper efforts to implement sound erosion control measures in many areas of the world. This book, released in the framework of the Global Symposium on Soil Erosion (15-17 May 2019) reviews the state-of-the-art information related to all topics related to soil erosion.

Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date and comprehensive report on the soils of Wisconsin, a state that offers a rich tapestry of soils. It discusses the relevant soil forming factors and soil processes in detail and subsequently reviews the main soil regions and dominant soil orders, including paleosols and endemic and endangered soils. The last chapters address soils in a changing climate and provide an evaluation of their monetary value and crop yield potential. Richly illustrated, the book offers both a valuable teaching resource and essential guide for policymakers, land users, and all those interested in the soils of Wisconsin.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eutrophication of Green Bay's freshwater due to phosphorus pollution is becoming a local and regional water quality problem. While efforts to identify and limit point source inputs of phosphorus have seen some success, non-point sources remain difficult to identify and remediate. Intensive land cultivation followed by synthetic and organic fertilizer applications have diminished the water quality of the Lower Fox River. The Lower Fox Demonstration Farms Network was formed in 2014 to implement best leading-edge conservation practices to reduce phosphorus entering Green Bay and Lake Michigan. This study was designed to establish baseline data for the current soil quality and economic performance of the farms enrolled in the Lower Fox Demonstration Farms Network, as well as to evaluate the relationship between soil quality indicators and farm production economic variables. Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) was used to integrate soil quality parameters from farm fields into a single field representative soil quality index. Economic assessment was performed using Crop Budget Analyzer, a tool designed by UW-Extension to help producers to track input costs, yields and field level profits. Among the six soil quality indicators used, regression equations established that bulk density and pH had the most significant influence on the overall field level soil quality index (SQI). Additional factors such as organic matter class and clay content contributed largely in the index values. Corn grain and silage yields were greater than the Brown County's 2015 average yields. Economic analysis did not find a clear difference in cost and profits among conservation practices during the first year of program implementation. This study showed that conservation practices can simultaneously be environmentally and economically viable. In the short term, cost share programs can enhance the practice adoption while in the long run, conservation practices have the potential to maintain or enhance producer returns through improved soil quality. This study also provides a foundation for future, longer-term studies of soil quality and economic implications of cropland conservation efforts.
