Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book excerpt: Fish assemblage structure was determined along a longitudinal gradient for three drainages in the upper John Day basin: Middle Fork, South Fork, and upper Mainstem proper. One or two tributaries in each drainage were included. Where possible, sites were paired: those with good versus those with poor riparian habitat. Detrended correspondence analysis was used to determine how the assemblages were structured and to determine which environmental variables influenced that structure. Two assemblages resulted: a warmwater assemblage dominated by speckled dace (Rhinichthys osculus), redside shiners (Richardsonius balteatus), northern squawfish (Ptychocheilus oreqonensis), and suckers (Catostomus spp.); and a coldwater assemblage dominated by juvenile steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), but also containing mountain whitefish (Prosopium williamsoni), piute sculpins (Cottus beldingi), and other salmonids. This coldwater assemblage had two distinct components: the chinook component and the steelhead component. The chinook component was concentrated in the mid-elevation reaches of the Mainstem and the Middle Fork, between the steelhead component and the warmwater assemblage. The primary physical gradient on which all assemblages aligned was an elevation/stream size gradient. A secondary gradient consisted of various riparian habitat and bank condition variables. Generally, riparian habitat improved moving toward the headwaters. Microhabitat use was compared for salmonids within a habitat type (i.e. pools, riffles, and runs) for mainstem and tributary streams. It was also compared for the same age classes and species between stream types (mainstem versus tributary). Finally, microhabitat selection (versus availability) was examined for significant differences between microhabitat available and that selected. Different age classes of steelhead and juvenile chinook salmon used different microhabitats in the same habitat type. These did not change significantly between habitats or stream type. All groups selected microhabitats that varied significantly from that available. The most important variables in all cases were focal point depth and focal point velocity, total depth and mean velocity.

Book excerpt: The Alsea Logging and Aquatic Resources Study, commissioned by the Oregon Legislature in 1959, marked the beginning of four decades of research in the Pacific Northwest devoted to understanding the impacts of forest practices on water quality, water quantity, aquatic habitat, and aquatic organism popu- tions. While earlier watershed research examined changes in runoff and erosion from various land uses, this study was the first watershed experiment to focus so heavily on aquatic habitat and organism response to forest practices. The Alsea Watershed Study, as it came to be known, extended over 15 years with seven years of pretreatment calibration measurements, a year of treatment, and seven years of post-treatment monitoring. The research was a cooperative effort with scientists from Oregon State University, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Cooperating landowners included the Georgia-Pacific Corporation, the U.S. Forest Service, and a local rancher. It was a remarkable 15-year partnership marked by excellent cooperation among the participants and outstanding coordination among the scientists, many of whom participated actively for the entire period.

Book excerpt: As the vast expanses of natural forests and the great populations of salmonids are harvested to support a rapidly expanding human population, the need to understand streams as ecological systems and to manage them effectively becomes increasingly urgent. The unfortunate legacy of such natural resource exploitation is well documented. For several decades the Pacific coastal ecoregion of North America has served as a natural laboratory for scientific and managerial advancements in stream ecology, and much has been learned about how to better integrate ecological processes and characteristics with a human-dominated environment. These in sightful but hard-learned ecological and social lessons are the subject of this book. Integrating land and rivers as interactive components of ecosystems and watersheds has provided the ecological sciences with impor tant theoretical foundations. Even though scientific disciplines have begun to integrate land-based processes with streams and rivers, the institutions and processes charged with managing these systems have not done so successfully. As a result, many of the watersheds of the Pacific coastal ecoregion no longer support natural settings for environmental processes or the valuable natural resources those processes create. An important role for scientists, educators, and decision makers is to make the integration between ecology and con sumptive uses more widely understood, as well as useful for effective management.
