Book Working with Rural Communities Participatory Action Research in Kenya

Download or read book Working with Rural Communities Participatory Action Research in Kenya written by P. Chitere and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 1991-12-29 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses itself to mobilisation and involvement of rural people in development projects. It describes an imperfect but, nonetheless, exciting and thought-provoking exercise that drew social science researchers and students from four public universities in Kenya into an experiment in participatory research, community education and development in two locations. The experiment was grounded on the assumptions that the people of Kenya are a primary resource and that given proper roles and contribution of planners, researchers and programme implementers, self-sustainable development can become a reality. The contributors of this book have focused on the potential of the university to facilitate participation of the people in development. They have given specific suggestions on how this might be accomplished.

Book Institutions and Gender Inequality

Download or read book Institutions and Gender Inequality written by Tabitha W. Kiriti-Ng'ang'a and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent efforts in national planning in Kenya have sought to identify development priorities through consultations. The Government of Kenya, in its effort to eradicate poverty and to promote pro-poor growth, established the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) under the Constituencies Development Fund Act of December 2003. This study sought to investigate whether the CDF has improved the livelihoods and welfare of women and girls in the Kenyan society and whether women are being enabled to participate more visibly in the local development processes. The objectives of this study were: To investigate the needs and priorities of males and females with regard to CDF projects as perceived by them; To establish the differences that may exist between the sexes in terms of awareness of the CDF and in terms of participation in CDF management, in project identification and implementation and in other decision-making processes that determine how these funds are invested; To evaluate the distributive impact of the CDF projects in the health and education sectors; To investigate the factors or challenges for the achievement of greater parity and for the attainment of CDF objectives; and to put forward policy recommendations.

Book Tax Justice and the Political Economy of Global Capitalism 1945 to the Present

Download or read book Tax Justice and the Political Economy of Global Capitalism 1945 to the Present written by Jeremy Leaman and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tax “justice” has become an increasingly central issue of political debate in many countries, particularly following the cardiac arrest of global financial services in 2008 and the subsequent worldwide slump in trade and production. The evident abuse of tax systems by corporations and rich individuals through tax avoidance schemes and offshore shadow banking is increasingly in the public eye. Above all, the political challenges of recovery and structural reform have raised core issues of burden-sharing and social equity on the agendas of both civil society groups and political elites. Democratic states need tax revenue to fund public goods and combat public “bads” with any degree of legitimacy. The contributions to this book discuss the haphazard evolution of contemporary taxation systems, their contradictory effects in a globalized economy, and the urgency of their reform as a precondition for social justice.

Book Distributive Politics in Developing Countries

Download or read book Distributive Politics in Developing Countries written by Mark Baskin and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the increasing use of Constituency Development Funds (CDFs) in emerging democratic governments in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Oceania. CDFs dedicate public money to benefit parliamentary constituencies through allocations and/or spending decisions influenced by Members of Parliament (MPs). The contributors employ the term CDF as a generic term although such funds have a different names, such as electoral development funds (Papua New Guinea), constituency development catalyst funds (Tanzania), or Member of Parliament Local Area Development Fund (India), etc. In some ways, the funds resemble the ad hoc pork barrel policy-making employed in the U.S. Congress for the past 200 years. However, unlike earmarks, CDFs generally become institutionalized in the government’s annual budget and are distributed according to different criteria in each country. They enable MPs to influence programs in their constituencies that finance education, and build bridges, roads, community centers, clinics and schools. In this sense, a CDF is a politicized form of spending that can help fill in the important gaps in government services in constituencies that have not been addressed in the government’s larger, comprehensive policy programs. This first comprehensive treatment of CDFs in the academic and development literatures emerges from a project at the State University of New York Center for International Development. This project has explored CDFs in 19 countries and has developed indicators on their emergence, operations, and oversight. The contributors provide detailed case studies of the emergence and operations of CDFs in Kenya, Uganda, Jamaica, and India, as well as an analysis of earmarks in the U.S. Congress, and a broader analysis of the emergence of the funds in Africa. They cover the emergence, institutionalization, and accountability of these funds; analyze key issues in their operations; and offer provisional conclusions of what the emergence and operations of these funds say about the democratization of politics in developing countries and current approaches to international support for democratic governance in developing countries.
