Book excerpt: Night Vision Devices (NVDs) employed by the military fall into two categories: Image Intensifiers (I2) also known as Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) and Infrared (IR). Each sensor provides unique visual information not available to the unaided human visual system. However, these devices have limitations and they have been listed as a causal factor in many crashes of military aircraft at night. Researchers hypothesize that digitally fusing the output from these sensors into one image and then artificially coloring the image will improve an NVD user's visual performance. The purpose of this thesis was to determine if fusion and coloring of static, natural scene NVG and IR imagery will improve reaction time and accuracy in target detection. Pairs of static images from three different scenes were obtained simultaneously from NVG and IR sensors. The six original images were fused pixel by pixel and then colored using a computer algorithm. A natural target was moved to two other coherent positions in the scene or completely removed, resulting in twenty-four images for each of the three natural scenes. Six subjects viewed the images randomly on a high- resolution monitor, rapidly indicating on a keypad if the target was present (1) or absent (2). Reaction time and accuracy were recorded. An ANOVA on the output and a subsequent review of the images revealed that fusion significantly impacted local (target) contrast and that, coupled with scene content, decreased performance on the task.

Book excerpt: Currently, the two most commonly used night optical devices employed in military operations are the long-wave infra-red sensor and the image intensified sensor. Recent advances in technology have permitted the fusion of the output of these two devices into a single color display that potentially combines the capabilities of both sensors while overcoming their limitations. Although the concept is appealing, previous sensor fusion studies have been inconclusive on the benefits of an artificially colored target. Perhaps, an artificially colored target disrupts an operator's visual processing thereby hindering the detection of a target. The purpose of this thesis is to compare the effects of artificial color, natural color, and monochrome formats in visual scene perception. It is hypothesized that participant response times and error rates would be greater at detecting an artificially colored target compared to a natural colored or a target presented achromatically. Two experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 used non-degraded imagery and Experiment 2 used degraded imagery to compare these effects. It was found that reaction time and error rates for naturally colored and achromatic images were similar and substantially less when compared to artificially colored images. For degraded scenes, natural color was more beneficial when compared to achromatic and artificially colored scenes. Additionally, artificially colored scenes caused extremely large error rates and reaction times. These results will provide algorithm developers insight into the importance of color constancy.

Different solutions for simulating NVG images were assessed. Two conditions simulated NVGs but used different software approaches. Two additional conditions simulated unaided night environments that required soldiers to wear NVGs. Four-man infantry teams conducted urban operation missions under each condition. Objective assessments were obtained on the number of events correctly detected and the average time required to detect an event. Subjective assessments of task difficulty and image fidelity were also made. No significant differences were found across night conditions for either event detection or time. Significant differences in task difficulty ratings occurred for movement, visual detection, and maintaining situation awareness. In general, tasks were more difficult to perform while wearing the NVGs compared to simulated versions of NVG images. Soldiers also ranked the conditions involving actual NVGs as more realistic. The unique contribution of virtual environments for night operations training may be at the entry level. However, specific image fidelity issues associated with the use of NVGs in simulated unaided night environments must be addressed if this approach is to be used as an effective training medium."--Stinet.
