Book excerpt: Abstract: The study examined the relationships among collegiate female student-athlete' s (n = 400) satisfaction with coaching leadership as determined by scores on the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS; Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980), emotional intelligence (EQ) of female (n 40) and male (n = 40) head coaches as measured by the BarOn EQ-i (Bar-On, 1997), and efficacy as reported on a demographic questionnaire. No significant mean differences existed for athlete self-efficacy (p .21), perceived coaching efficacy (p .51), or for coach self-efficacy (p .35). A significant negative correlation (r = -.15, p .00) existed between satisfaction with Democratic Behavior and coach self-efficacy. Total EQ, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, and Adaptability were significant (p .05) predictors of satisfaction with Democratic Behavior. A significant (r = .104, p .04) correlation existed between satisfaction with Autocratic Behavior and coach selfefficacy. A significant correlation (r = .114, p .02) was found between satisfaction with Social Support Behavior and athlete self-efficacy. Athlete self-efficacy was a significant (p .05) predictor of satisfaction with Social Support Behavior.

Book excerpt: The quality of the coach-athlete relationship is comprised of the coach and athletes’ closeness, commitment, and cooperative interactions, and is determined by multiple relationship factors including athlete perceptions of coach confidence and coach power. Empirical research has associated coach confidence with athlete satisfaction and certain types of leader authority have been empirically linked to high levels of follower satisfaction and performance. Coach confidence and power are proposed to work through the coach-athlete relationship in predicting athlete satisfaction. The proposed research question will investigate whether the coach-athlete relationship acts as a mediator through which athletes’ perceptions of coach power and coach confidence predict athlete satisfaction. The study employed a cross sectional design utilizing self-report survey data from a sample (n=365) of NCAA Division I track & field athletes. Four research tested valid and reliable questionnaires using 7 point Likert scales were used to assess the research question: Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire, Power in Sport Questionnaire, Coach Efficacy Scale, and the Athlete Satisfaction Questionnaire. Correlational analyses and mediation analyses were used to analyze the survey data. Results revealed a mediation effect of the coach-athlete relationship on coach power (b=0.30, 95% CI [0.16, 0.48]) and coach confidence (b=0.21, 95% CI [0.09, 0.37]), in predicting athlete satisfaction. This study highlights the importance of cultivating a positive and healthy coach-athlete relationship both for performance and satisfaction of both athlete and coach. The study also explains how different sources of coach power can be received positively or negatively, based on the quality of the coach-athlete relationship. Lastly, this study provides more insight into the leader power and follower (athlete) satisfaction dynamic in the sport setting, whereas most social power research to date has been within the business psychology domain. Future studies should provide additional empirical evidence for coaching education and interventions aimed to improve strategies for coaching effectiveness and athletic performance.

For many, youth sports have been considered a right of passage to adolescence with organized youth sports programs being encased in communities for a handful of decades. Within that time, a plethora of research has examined various psychological and social outcomes to participation, including perceived enjoyment of sport participation, self-confidence, and social relationships. In addition, the role and contribution of the coach to such outcomes have been well studied suggesting children of trained coaches are more likely to have higher levels of perceived enjoyment of sport participation, self-confidence, and social skills. Despite the breadth of research in the field, much of the knowledge of physical activity has stemmed from the assumption that higher levels of such psychosocial attributes produce higher levels of participation and daily physical activity via sport play. Unfortunately, few studies have gone so far as to measure physical activity levels of children participating in youth sports. The purpose of this study was to explore physical activity levels and contextual factors of physical activity among children participating in organized youth sport practices, and influence of coaching experience and coaching efficacy on levels of physical activity. Physical activity levels were obtained via Actigraph accelerometer and the OSRAC:YS direct observation system, with the latter also used to collect information on the contextual factors of physical activity during youth sport practices. Adult volunteer coaches completed coaching experience and coaching efficacy questionnaires. Results of the study suggest approximately one-third of practice time is spent in recommended levels of physical activity and 40% in sedentary activity. Practice context and coach behavior were shown to be significantly associated with MVPA. Across all teams, coaches spent a significant proportion of practice time providing general instruction and management of players/activities, which were less likely to be associated with MVPA. Coaching efficacy was not significantly associated with children's MVPA. Lastly, end of the season coaching efficacy scores were significantly related to scores measured earlier in the season.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The investigation was designed to analyze coaching behaviors and gender of athletes in reference to self-efficacy levels of youth soccer athletes. Youth soccer coaches (N = 7) were observed during three practice sessions using the Coaching Behavior Assessment System (CBAS; Smith, Smoll, & Hunt, 1977). A total of 31 female and 36 male youth soccer athletes, ages 7 to 13, completed the Perceived Soccer Competence Scale (PSCS; Feltz & Brown, 1984). No significant (p> .05) linear relationships were found between positive or negative subscales of the CBAS (Smith et al., 1977) with regard to scores of athletes on the PSCS (Feltz & Brown, 1984). Also, two 2 x 2 ANOVAs were conducted examining coach rank, for positive and negative behaviors, and gender to PSCS (Feltz & Brown, 1984) scores. Coaches were ranked based on the degree to which they utilized positive and negative feedback. No significant interactions or main effect differences were found for either of the 2 x 2 ANOVAs. The perceived soccer competence scores of athletes were similar despite playing for coaches who utilized either positive or negative feedback. Perceived soccer competence was similar for both males and females. In the future it is suggested that research in youth sport in the natural setting, examine efficacy of athletes who are repeatedly exposed to negative or positive coaching.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The Multidimensional Model for Sport Leadership (MML) (Chelladurai, 1980) states that athlete performance and satisfaction are functions of the congruency between the preferred leadership of student-athletes, the required behavior of the coach as dictated by the situation, and the actual behavior of the coach. The model was developed nearly 30 years ago and while research outside of sport has indicated that leadership preferences have changed with generations, the MML is still the most widely accepted model for sport leadership. As such, research in sport should examine how appropriate the model is to todays athletic culture. Gender, one member characteristic, has been researched considerably, with conflicting results, while race has been largely ignored with preferential leadership. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine what extent the preferred coaching behaviors reported by student athletes vary based on race, gender, and playing time and measure the congruency of those preferences with the actual coaching behaviors reported by coaches. NCAA Division-I student-athletes (n = 140) and head coaches (n = 14) in Baseball, Mens and Womens Basketball, Mens and Womens Soccer, Softball, and Volleyball were surveyed using the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (RLSS). Using multiple regression analysis, the author attempted to predict what coaching behaviors student-athletes preferred based on student-athlete gender, race, and playing time. None of the regression models were significant, indicating a lack of variance between the predictor groups. Also, the current data revealed that student-athletes reported a significantly higher means in the Democratic Behavior and Situational Consideration subscales than head coaches, indicating a degree of incompatibility between student-athlete preference and actual coaching behaviors. A revision of the RLSS might yield more significant and meaningful results, as two of the subscales displayed low levels of internal consistency.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship among coach leadership factors, perceived motivational climate, and athlete psychosocial outcomes. Servant leadership is a concept growing in interest and popularity in many domains (Anderson, 2005; Drury, 2004; Rieke, Hammermeister, & Chase, 2008). This research examined the impact of coach servant leadership on perceived motivational climate and athlete psychosocial outcomes among 260 female high school club soccer players. Coaches and athletes assessed coach servant leadership using the RSLP-S (Hammermeister et al., 2008). Athletes answered surveys on perceived motivational climate and a range of psychosocial outcomes, including ability to cope with stress, sport confidence, ability beliefs, intrinsic motivation, motivational orientations, trait anxiety, and individual and team satisfaction. Hierarchical Linear Models were set up to test individual hypotheses. Findings revealed that coaches' servant leadership perceptions differed for coaches and athletes. As a result, coach-perceived servant leadership did not predict increments in motivation climate or athlete psychosocial outcomes. However, the athlete-perceived coach servant leadership enhanced prediction efficiency for perceived mastery climate and most of the positive psychosocial outcomes. While the addition of athlete-perceived servant leadership predicted increments in mastery climate in the HLM model, only the trust/inclusion subscale was significant. If athletes perceive a coach as trustworthy and inclusive, they were more likely to perceive a mastery climate. Additionally, coaches who were older and had higher license levels within US Youth Soccer created a stronger mastery climate. The discrepancy between athlete and coach perceptions is consistent with research in social psychology (Harms and Crede, 2010) and sport (Smith & Smoll, 1999) where leaders such as coaches seem to be inaccurate judges of their own behaviors. Thus, these findings suggest that it may be important for coaches of this age group to find ways to develop perceptions of trust and inclusion among their athletes.
