Book The Effects of Implementing Restorative Justice in an In school Suspension Program

Download or read book The Effects of Implementing Restorative Justice in an In school Suspension Program written by Nikki Brown-Kersey and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the proposed study was to assess the effects of implementing an in-school suspension program with a Restorative Justice component on office referrals, suspensions and grade point averages. The combination or Restorative Justice and in-school suspension as an alternative to out-of-school suspension warrants empirical evaluation. According to recent research, neither Restortive Justice nor in-school suspension alone have enough empirical evidence to support their success and continued use in school in isolation. The positive aspects of each combined may produce a more successful alternative to suspension. A group design procedure was used to assess if significant changes in the number of office referrals, suspensions and/or grade point averages are made when the in-school suspension program with the Restorative Justice component is implemented. This program has been implemented in an urban middle school in Michigan at the request of the school principal. The purpose of this study was to compare school data on referrals, suspensions and grade point averages from a six month time period prior to the implementation of the program with data during the six months when the program was implemented. This study may provide useful information to the school and to the district regarding whether or not the program is a viable alternative to out-of-school suspension.

Book An effective in school suspension program

Download or read book An effective in school suspension program written by Eduardo Carlos Garcia and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers are often times faced with students that make poor choices. In some cases these students may be suspended from school. Some schools have implemented an in-school suspension program for some of the less severe offences. This allows the student to stay at school so they do not miss any of their school work while maintaining the student in an isolated area. However some ISS programs have not addressed the issue of students repeating their poor behavior. This program is designed to help students make better choices through self-reflection and counseling. At the end of the year the data will analyzed so that further adjustments may be made to deter students from returning to ISS.

Book Suspended For Life

Download or read book Suspended For Life written by C. Twiggy Billue and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “SUSPENDED FOR LIFE” takes an empirical look via real experiences at how Zero Tolerance Policies contained in the schools “Code of Conduct “disregards the rights of the student, especially students with disabilities. These policies are failing students everywhere including my residence of Syracuse New York. Statistically these unfair and biased “Zero Tolerance Policies” have led to very high suspension rates affecting mainly, inner-city students but overwhelmingly target students with IEPs, 504 Accommodations, the “untested but suspected LD student “ and the intellectually gifted student. Healthcare, Mental Health and Medical Privacy (HIPPA) now play large roles in school especially in decisions to suspend a student however coupled with a school districts Code of Conduct they have become a crucial aspect for suspension. Once you understand the link between a referral to “In-School-Suspension (ISSwarehousing students) or a referral for Out-of-School Suspension (OSS—push out of students) you will realize that in most cases suspension can lead directly to the prison industrial complex for our young women and men. Stopping this from happening to your student may depend on how well you are prepared to advocate for your child. We must not allow suspension to push out our children because ostensibly it may be ensuring them a life sentence of unemployment, crime, or even death. We say it starts at home with the parents, so if we can better understand our student’s rights and the rights we have as parents we can better prepare ourselves to advocate for our student and to hold the school district accountable for the Education of Our Children!
