Download or read book Fisheries Law in Australia written by Warwick Loweth Gullett and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive analysis of the law that shapes the highly complex regulatory environment in which commercial and recreational fishing takes place. Fisheries Law in Australia provides an analysis of the many and varied laws governing fishing in Australia. It provides an analysis of: the complicated jurisdictional arrangements that have evolved for the management of marine areas; the regulatory mechanisms used to manage fishing activities; the enduring impact of the common law; legal recognition of indigenous fishing rights; legislative fisheries management objectives; the increasing impact of environmental legislation on the conduct and management of fishing activities; case law including prosecutions for fisheries offences and challenges to fisheries management decisions; and the impact of international law on the development of measures to protect Australian fisheries from illegal foreign fishers.

Book Adaptive management of fisheries in response to climate change

Download or read book Adaptive management of fisheries in response to climate change written by Bahri, T., Vasconcellos, M., Welch, D.J., Johnson, J., Perry, R.I., Ma, X. & Sharma, R. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report aims to accelerate climate change adaptation implementation in fisheries management throughout the world. It showcases how flexibility can be introduced in the fisheries management cycle in order to foster adaptation, strengthen the resilience of fisheries, reduce their vulnerability to climate change, and enable managers to respond in a timely manner to the projected changes in the dynamics of marine resources and ecosystems. The publication includes a set of good practices for climate-adaptive fisheries management that have proven their effectiveness and can be adapted to different contexts, providing a range of options for stakeholders including the fishing industry, fishery managers, policymakers and others involved in decision-making. These good practices were linked to one or more of the three common climate-related impacts on fisheries resources: distributional change; productivity change; and species composition change. Therefore, these three impacts can serve as practical entry points to guide decision-makers in identifying good practice adaptation measures suitable for their local contexts. These good practices are based upon transferable experiences and lessons learned from the thirteen case studies across the globe and hopefully will contribute to greater uptake and implementation of climate-adaptive fisheries management measures on the ground.

Book Sharks Conservation Governance and Management

Download or read book Sharks Conservation Governance and Management written by Erika J. Techera and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key aim of this book is to explore the global conservation and management of sharks. There has been a rapid decline in populations of many shark species, while new science has emerged of the critical role they play in marine ecosystems. However, the authors show that conservation law and policy have been slow to develop, with only a small number of iconic species being protected worldwide. The increase in fishing impact – primarily through shark finning and by-catch - has led to shark conservation receiving greater international attention in recent years. The book explores our current knowledge and status of the law and science in relation to sharks with a particular focus on improving frameworks for their conservation and management. Recent trends are analysed, including shark finning bans that have been put in place in several countries, the widening number of nations establishing shark sanctuaries and the growth of shark-based tourism. The efficacy of current listing processes for endangered species and fisheries regulations is also examined. Tourism is explored as an alternative to fishing and the risks and impacts associated with this industry are analysed. Contributors include leading authorities from universities and conservation organizations in North America, Europe and Australia. A common theme is to emphasise the importance of collaborative governance between various interest groups and the need for inter-disciplinary research and management approaches that are necessary to address the decline in sharks.

Book Creation of USVI Recreational Fishing Regulations

Download or read book Creation of USVI Recreational Fishing Regulations written by William Tobias and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Recreational sport fishing for reef fish, coastal pelagic and pelagic species is a popular pastime in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Random household telephone surveys conducted by Jennings 1992 and Mateo 2004 indicate that approximately 10% of Virgin Islanders recreationally fish. Although commercial fishing regulations were legislated in1972, regulations specifically for recreational fishing are, for the most part, non-existent, except for conch and shrimp. Recreational fishery assessment surveys have been intermittent and the resource users and fishery are not well defined. The only long-term database maintained is on the recreational tournament fishery. Federal regulations now require a registration of all anglers and spearfishers fishing in federal waters (Marine Recreational Information Program-MRIP). The development of a territorial recreational fishing licensing program and recreational fishing regulations is needed"--Page 2.
