Book The Traveling Artist in the Italian Renaissance

Download or read book The Traveling Artist in the Italian Renaissance written by David Young Kim and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important and innovative book examines artists' mobility as a critical aspect of Italian Renaissance art. It is well known that many eminent artists such as Cimabue, Giotto, Donatello, Lotto, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Titian traveled. This book is the first to consider the sixteenth-century literary descriptions of their journeys in relation to the larger Renaissance discourse concerning mobility, geography, the act of creation, and selfhood. David Young Kim carefully explores relevant themes in Giorgio Vasari's monumental Lives of the Artists, in particular how style was understood to register an artist's encounter with place. Through new readings of critical ideas, long-standing regional prejudices, and entire biographies, The Traveling Artist in the Italian Renaissance provides a groundbreaking case for the significance of mobility in the interpretation of art and the wider discipline of art history.

Book Art History and Fetishism Abroad

Download or read book Art History and Fetishism Abroad written by Gabriele Genge and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By focusing on the various modes and media of the fetishised object, this anthology shifts the debates on thingness into a new global art historical perspective. The contributors explore the attention given to those material images, in both artistic and cultural practice from the heyday of colonial expansion until today. They show that in becoming vehicles and agents of transculturality, so called »fetishes« take shape in the 17th to 19th century aesthetics, psychology and ethnography - and furthermore inspire a recent discourse on magical practice and its secular meanings requiring altered art historical approaches and methods.

Book The American Woman Abroad

Download or read book The American Woman Abroad written by Blanche McManus and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE American Woman needs no introduction abroad. Always she is the most welcome of the throngs of self-invited guests who attend the great annual "At Home" which the European world holds for the visiting strangers, an entertainment that is becoming an all the year around function. All that Europe has to offer is hers on call, so long as she radiates that graciousness and appreciation which everywhere distinguishes her - the most vivacious and distinctive feminine personality of all the women of the world to be seen on the European Playground. To the American woman abroad is due the credit of having so far influenced the conventions and traditions of the Old World as to have it recognise and accept with good grace (in so far at least as her own actions are concerned) a new standard of feminine conduct - freer and more independent than its own, but none the less modest and self-protective.

Book Little Women Abroad

Download or read book Little Women Abroad written by Louisa May Alcott and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1870, Louisa May Alcott and her younger sister Abby May Alcott began a fourteen-month tour of Europe. Louisa had already made her mark as a writer; May was on the verge of a respected art career. Little Women Abroad gathers a generous selection of May’s drawings along with all of the known letters written by the two Alcott sisters during their trip. More than thirty drawings are included, nearly all of them previously unpublished. Of the seventy-one letters collected here, more than three-quarters appear in their entirety for the first time. Daniel Shealy’s supporting materials add detail and context to the people, places, and events referenced in the letters and illustrations. By the time of the Alcott sisters’ sojourn, Louisa’s Little Women was already an international success, and her most recent work, An Old-Fashioned Girl, was selling briskly. Louisa was now a grand literary lioness on tour. She would compose Little Men while in Europe, and her European letters would form the basis of her travel book Shawl Straps. If Louisa’s letters reveal a writer’s eye, then May’s demonstrate an eye for color, detail, and composition. Although May had prior art training in Boston, she came into her own only during her studies with European masters. When at a loss for words, she took her drawing pen in hand. These letters of two important American artists, one literary, the other visual, tell a vibrant story at the crossroads of European and American history and culture.
