Book The Encyclopedia of New York City

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of New York City written by Kenneth T. Jackson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 1582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering an exhaustive range of information about the five boroughs, the first edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City was a success by every measure, earning worldwide acclaim and several awards for reference excellence, and selling out its first printing before it was officially published. But much has changed since the volume first appeared in 1995: the World Trade Center no longer dominates the skyline, a billionaire businessman has become an unlikely three-term mayor, and urban regeneration—Chelsea Piers, the High Line, DUMBO, Williamsburg, the South Bronx, the Lower East Side—has become commonplace. To reflect such innovation and change, this definitive, one-volume resource on the city has been completely revised and expanded. The revised edition includes 800 new entries that help complete the story of New York: from Air Train to E-ZPass, from September 11 to public order. The new material includes broader coverage of subject areas previously underserved as well as new maps and illustrations. Virtually all existing entries—spanning architecture, politics, business, sports, the arts, and more—have been updated to reflect the impact of the past two decades. The more than 5,000 alphabetical entries and 700 illustrations of the second edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City convey the richness and diversity of its subject in great breadth and detail, and will continue to serve as an indispensable tool for everyone who has even a passing interest in the American metropolis.

  • Author : Greg Delanty

Download or read book Selected Delanty written by Greg Delanty and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A sense of vital, actual experience is in fact wonderfully sustained in Delanty's verse in its notable linguistic energy, product of a distinctive fusion of a literary lexicon (even Latinate at times) with contemporary demotic, Cork argot, Irish language phrases, place names, craft cant and North American slang (baseball lingo in one poem, `Tagging the Stealer'). The language of his verse functions indeed as the verbal equivalent of the printer's hellbox (subject of one of the finest of Delanty's poems), which the poet tells us `was a container in which worn or broken type was thrown to be melted down and recast into new type'. For in Delanty's work a world in constant transition (the `simultaneous going and comings of life') is realized in a vocabulary and variegated tonal register that displays language itself in the process of being re-made." -- Terence Brown, "Greg Delanty and North America", Agenda, 2008. Following upon his Guggenheim Fellowship, Agenda devoted its Summer/Autumn issue in 2008 to the celebration of Greg Delanty's 50th birthday. In a sense it was a twain celebration, language being re-made and voice re-born by Atlantic Crossings. Ulster people are British and Irish people are Irish, and never the twain shall meet. An adaptation of Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet. -- Rudyard Kipling, `Barrack-Room Ballads' (1892). But what, when the twain meet, of Greg Delanty and North America. Un-Gyve Press is pleased to publish this first Selected Delanty.

Book Under a Blue Moon

Download or read book Under a Blue Moon written by Isabella S. Oehry and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this extraordinary adventure, spiked with humor and insight, Isa Oehry documents a journey that began innocently under the golden light of a full moon. Mysteriously nourished, enriched, and highly energized by an unknown force under nothing but a moon surrounded by thousands of stars, she felt a prompting, inviting her to a destination yet unknown, to a hidden world concealing ancient wisdom. She spontaneously decided to set out to find it. Her search led her into a world where people, according to the laws of science, have no right to be alive. Her eyes were opened to previously unknown and what at first sight appear as unbelievable truths. Understandings about this earth, its people, animals and plants—the entire universe—suddenly no longer applied. Although it was Isa Oehry who was the one to walk this extraordinary journey and experience the adventures, the insights are meant for all of us. This true story inspires us to look beyond the obvious, and keep our minds and hearts open for the unseen and previously unheard. It forever changes how we view the world we live in.

Book The Greensboro Blockhouse Project

Download or read book The Greensboro Blockhouse Project written by Jill L. Baker and published by Indiego Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Revolutionary War progressed, little-known events were unfolding in the rugged wilderness region of northern Vermont. General Jacob Bayley, Colonel Moses Hazen and their soldiers carved out a military road, the Bayley-Hazen Military Road, from Newbury to Westfield, also known as Hazen¿s Notch. The intended purpose of this road was to provide a speedy conduit for troops to reach southern Canada. Four blockhouses were constructed along the road to accommodate soldiers and act as footholds in the region. After the war, the road and blockhouses facilitated the spread of settlement in the untamed wilderness. The Greensboro blockhouse provided housing to soldiers and civilians, aiding in the establishment of the town of Greensboro, Vermont. Eventually the blockhouse fell into ruin and folkloric memory, until now. This book presents the history of the Greensboro blockhouse and the data produced from four years of archaeological investigation, including 72 full-color images, maps, letters, and photos of the excavation and the material recovered during that process. The authors are proud to preserve this little-known chapter in America¿s formative history as a living memory for future generations.

Download or read book Partners in Design written by David A. Hanks and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1920s and 1930s saw the birth of modernism in the United States, a new aesthetic, based on the principles of the Bauhaus in Germany: its merging of architecture with fine and applied arts; and rational, functional design devoid of ornament and without reference to historical styles. Alfred H. Barr Jr., the then 27-year-old founding director of the Museum of Modern Art, and 23-year-old Philip Johnson, director of its architecture department, were the visionary young proponents of the modern approach. Shortly after meeting at Wellesley College, where Barr taught art history, and as Johnson finished his studies in philosophy at Harvard, they set out on a path that would transform the museum world and change the course of design in America. The Museum of Modern Art opened just over a week after the stock market crash of 1929. In the depths of the Depression, using as their laboratories both MoMA and their own apartments in New York City, Barr and Johnson experimented with new ideas in museum ideology, extending the scope beyond painting and sculpture to include architecture, photography, graphic design, furniture, industrial design, and film; with exhibitions of ordinary, machine-made objects (including ball bearings and kitchenware) elevated to art by their elegant design; and with installations in dramatically lit galleries with smooth, white walls. Partners in Design, which accompanies an exhibition opening at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in April 2016, chronicles their collaboration, placing it in the larger context of the avant-garde in New York—1930s salons where they mingled with Julien Levy, the gallerist who brought Surrealism to the United States, and Lincoln Kirstein, co-founder of the New York City Ballet; their work to help Bauhaus artists like Josef and Anni Albers escape Nazi Germany—and the dissemination of their ideas across the United States through MoMA’s traveling exhibition program. Plentifully illustrated with icons of modernist design, MoMA installation views, and previously unpublished images of the Barr and Johnson apartments—domestic laboratories for modernism, and in Johnson’s case, designed and furnished by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—this fascinating study sheds new light on the introduction and success in North America of a new kind of modernism, thanks to the combined efforts of two uniquely discerning and influential individuals.
