Book The Pueblo Bonito Mounds of Chaco Canyon

Download or read book The Pueblo Bonito Mounds of Chaco Canyon written by Patricia L. Crown and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaco Canyon has one of the most significant concentrations of archaeological remains in North America. Pueblo Bonito, the largest and best known of Chaco’s great houses, was largely excavated in the late 1890s and early 1920s, but then no extensive excavations were conducted at the site until a team of archaeologists from the University of New Mexico began work there in 2004. In exploring the possible evidence of water-control features, archaeologists recovered some 200,000 artifacts. Here they use the artifacts and fauna they found to examine the lives and activities of the inhabitants of Pueblo Bonito as well as to further interpret current models of Chaco archaeology. The contributors particularly focus on questions regarding crafts production, long-distance exchange relationships, and evidence for feasting and other ritual behavior. The results from the 2004–2008 excavations challenge many interpretations related to the daily activities of the Pueblo Bonito population while supporting others.

Book The American Southwest and Mesoamerica

Download or read book The American Southwest and Mesoamerica written by Jonathon E. Ericson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional approaches to the study of prehistoric exchange have generated much new knowledge about intergroup and regional interaction. The American South west and Mesoamerica: Systems of Prehistoric Exchange is the first of two volumes that seek to provide current information regarding regional exchange on a conti nental basis. From a theoretical perspective, these volumes provide important data for the comparative analysis of regional systems relative to sociopolitical organization from simple hunter-gatherers to those of complex sociopolitical entities like the state. Although individual regional exchange systems are unique for each region and time period, general patterns emerge relative to sOciopolitical organization. Of significant interest to us are the dynamic processes of change, stability, rate of growth, and collapse of regional exchange systems relative to sociopolitical complexity. These volumes provide basic data to further our under standing of prehistoric exchange systems. The volume presents our current state of knowledge about regional exchange systems in the American Southwest and Mesoamerica. Each chapter synthesizes the research findings of a number of other researchers in order to provide a synchronic view of regional interaction for a specific chronological period. A diachronic view is also prOvided for regional interaction in the context of the developments in regional SOciopolitical organization. Most authors go beyond description by proposing alternative models within which to understand regional interaction. The book is organized by geographical and chronological divisions to pro vide units of the broader mosaic of prehistoric exchange systems.

Book Archeological Investigations in Cochiti Reservoir New Mexico

Download or read book Archeological Investigations in Cochiti Reservoir New Mexico written by Jan V. Biella and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report represents the third in a publication series which summarizes the results of a multiphase cultural resource management program in Cochiti Reservoir, New Mexico. The present phase of the research concerns a program for mitigation for those archeological sites which will be directly impacted by the floodwaters between 5322 and 5400 foot elevations retained in Cochiti Reservoir. During the course of the mitigation program, twenty sites that span late Archaic (En Medio phase), Anasazi(Pueblo III, Pueblo IV), and Historic (Spanish Colonial, Territorial) periods have been investigated. The site reports and appendices to this volume provide descriptive summaries of the results of the mitigation program at the intrasite level of analysis.
