Book excerpt: Throughout New France, Native and non-Native peoples frequently interacted as a result of French colonialism. These prolonged relationships affected the ways in which people identified themselves and others around them. To explore this dynamic process, historical archaeologists can examine the material culture left behind. Architectural remains are particularly informative because inhabitants construct their buildings in accordance to their needs and cultural values. Fort St. Joseph, an eighteenth-century mission, garrison, and trading post, is utilized as a case study to examine architecture and how it was employed to express identity. Daily interaction between Native and French peoples in the fur trade provides scholars with an opportunity to explore the varying effects of cultural interaction on identity. Architectural elements discovered through excavation at the fort offer insights on the techniques and materials used in the construction of its buildings. Historic documents reveal little information on the fort's built environment, highlighting the importance of archaeological evidence. This study examines the architectural remains of Fort St. Joseph in order to determine the types of construction techniques and materials used by the fort's occupants. Knowledge gleaned about the techniques and materials employed will provide evidence for how occupants were choosing to express their identity through architecture at an important frontier outpost on the edge of empire.

Book excerpt: In the field of archaeology, surveying and mapping have played key roles in documenting and analyzing site data. With the advancements in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), this integration of spatial data is made easier and better visualization can be attained for site layout and artifact distributions both horizontally, in space, and also vertically through a temporal component. The ongoing excavations at Fort St. Joseph (Smithsonian trinomial- 20BE23), near Niles, Michigan, makes it an excellent site for exploring the evolution of applied GIS methodology and the adjustment of among ongoing static database applications to new spatial methods of investigating site distributions. The fort was occupied from 1691 until 1781, over which time it was a mission, military garrison, and trading post. Excavations have taken place annually since 2002 with a hiatus in 2003 , 2005, and 2014, providing 11 years of data for analysis. The purpose of this project is to use GIS to assess the ways in which the dynamic nature of long term archaeological digs, with data being added annually, changes the understanding of spatial and temporal patterns over time. Analysis will include measures of artifact densities, and relationships among spatial patterning of artifact classes, as well as predictions and interpretations of these densities and distributions. An additional outcome of this project will be an active and updatable, documented geodatabase that links artifact and site data with a geographic location, useable by those involved with research in the Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fort St. Joseph is a 17th-18th century French (and later English) mission-garrison-trading post complex located in southwest Michigan. A geophysical survey was performed and the results of the survey were tested through archaeological excavation. The geophysical methods included ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic induction, electrical resistivity, magnetic gradiometry, and magnetic susceptibility. The results of the archaeological excavations demonstrate that magnetic gradiometry was the preferred geophysical method at this particular site. The magnetic gradiometer survey included both terrestrial and possible submerged portions the site. Laboratory analysis of the magnetic susceptibility and magnetic viscosity of soils and rocks demonstrated that the archaeological features at Fort St. Joseph have a statistically significant magnetic contrast with those of the natural soils. This study has the potential to contribute to the fields of French colonial archaeology, wet site archaeology, and soil and rock magnetism. Recommendations for future research are suggested, including investigating a possible submerged cultural resource located a few meters north of the existing riverbank.

Book excerpt: Since 1998 Western Michigan University archaeologists have investigated Fort St. Joseph, an 18th century mission, garrison and trading post located in present day Niles, Michigan. The project's research directive focuses on exploring notions of identity formation and its material expression in light of the prolonged and persistent cultural contact between Native Americans and Europeans at the site. This thesis seeks to further this directive by exploring how personal adornment materiality both structures and broadcasts individuals social identities. By employing an intrasite spatial analysis of the assemblage of adornment artifacts from recognized domestic contexts at Fort St. Joseph this thesis will examine how the fort's inhabitants were using material culture to create their own personal identities on the frontier of New France. For comparative purposes this thesis will employ the personal adornment items excavated from several different cultural areas at Fort Michilimackinac, an 18th century French outpost where Europeans and Native individuals resided. From the body of evidence analyzed, this thesis argues that at Fort St. Joseph a strong Native presence greatly influenced the adornment choices of a mixture of voyageurs, small scale traders, and families that likely included Native American wives and the metis offspring of these unions who lived in a series of small domiciles in a residential area of the fort.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to identify the age, country and place of origin, function (e.g. fusil, pistol), and intended use (e.g. military, trade gun) of flintlock components recovered from Fort St. Joseph (20BE23), an eighteenth-century French mission-garrison-trading post in southwest Michigan. Flintlock muskets were a vital technology in New France throughout the fur trade era, both in their roles as weapons and as hunting implements. They were also important because their relatively complex nature necessitated localized, frontier supply and repair; their use and maintenance were integrated into many facets of frontier life. Historical documents and archaeological materials show that Fort St. Joseph was one location where flintlock-related activities occurred. Close examination of Fort St. Joseph's flintlock artifacts provides insight into the weapons that were used and maintained on the frontier, as well as the significant roles they played in the North American fur trade more widely.
