Book excerpt: In late 1993 and early 1994, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District assisted Patrick Air Force Base by conducting a Section 6 Summary, as required by Public Law 101-601 (the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act), and a survey of archaeological collections and associated documentation recovered from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Three facilities--Cape Canaveral Air Force Station; New South Associates, Stone Mountain, Georgia; and the Florida Division of Historic Resources, Bureau of Archaeological Research, Tallahassee were visited by St. Louis District personnel. Approximately 12 ft3 of artifacts and three linear feet of associated records were examined to locate the presence of unassociated funerary objects, objects of cultural patrimony, or sacred objects and to evaluate the current condition of Cape Canaveral archaeological materials. No Section 6 Summary items were found, and it was determined that all Cape Canaveral collections require at least partial rehabilitation to comply with Federal regulations.

Book Assessment of Potential Archaeological Collections Facility Sites at Edwards Air Force Base

Download or read book Assessment of Potential Archaeological Collections Facility Sites at Edwards Air Force Base written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to comply with 36 CFR Part 79, Curation and Management of Federally-Owned and Administered Archeological Collections, Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) archaeological materials must be properly housed in a facility capable of providing for their long-term care. The present base repository, however, does not meet the requirements in 36 CFR Part 79. Therefore, Edwards AFB personnel requested the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections, St. Louis District, to assist them in determining an appropriate plan of action to correct this problem. On June 15, 1994, architects and archaeologists from the St. Louis District evaluated the feasibility of one existing structure on Edwards AFB to serve as a curation facility. Six sites also were assessed as potential curation-facility construction sites. The existing building was determined to be inappropriate for a curation facility, but three of the six sites would provide good locations for a facility. Finally, St. Louis District architects prepared preliminary drawings, including cost estimates, for a curation facility on Edwards AFB.

Book Assessment of Potential Archaeological Collections Facility Sites at Eaker Air Force Base Blytheville Arkansas

Download or read book Assessment of Potential Archaeological Collections Facility Sites at Eaker Air Force Base Blytheville Arkansas written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1994, the Arkansas Archeological Survey (AAS), a unit of the University of Arkansas, contacted the St. Louis District for assistance in evaluating the feasibility of using an existing building on Eaker Air Force Base for the Mississippi Valley Cultural Heritage Center-a proposed central facility devoted to the curation needs of archaeological materials recovered from the region and to their academic and educational use. A St. Louis District architectural feasibility team evaluated five extant buildings and provided recommendations on each one's applicability for use. Two buildings-Building Numbers 552 and 1225-could be rehabilitated as a central curation facility. Cost estimates for the rehabilitation of each of these buildings, along with a cost estimate for a new, preengineered building, provide the AAS with comparative data for the planning process.
