Book Kinship and Marriage in Early Arabia

Download or read book Kinship and Marriage in Early Arabia written by William Robertson Smith and published by Cambridge : University Press. This book was released on 1885 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Robertson Smith reveals the ancient familial and marital customs of Arabia, detailing their significance in the social and hierarchical structure of the society. First appearing in the 1880s, this enquiry did much to introduce and clarify Arabian customs of marriage and kinship to scholars working in the West. The place of the father and mother in the household, and the significance of children male and female, has a strong bearing on the community life of each tribe. Many tribes would use totemism to establish a person's lineage and relations, with totem symbols being commonplace in the Arabic tribes of yore. The bond of blood was considered enormously significant among nomadic groups; many felt a kinship even over vast geographic distances and despite meeting with one another only on rare occasions. Smith is meticulous in his sources, referencing historical documents produced in Arabia, in the courts of various rulers, as well as holy texts and other pertinent records. The result is an authentic and impeccably written narrative which sheds light not simply on its subject of family bonds, but on wider Arabian culture and history. This reprint reproduces the instances of Arabic and Hebrew text, so that readers can fully comprehend the significance and depth of the research.

Book The Courage to Be Jewish and the Wife of an Arab Sheik

Download or read book The Courage to Be Jewish and the Wife of an Arab Sheik written by Anne Hart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-06-24 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's a nice Brooklyn Jewish girl novelist with a fiddle doing married to an Arab Sheik dressed like a Queen of Egypt in the deserts? Playing the G-string. Comparing Mizrahi music to Klezmer and Taksim to Magham Seekah. Poetry found its mood here. At dawn I rose on October 25, 1963 to see the salmon slit that ripped the East. My eyes were weary, but the day had to begin. Above, a jet cracked the sky, leaving a feathery trail of scattering wisps of smoke. These clouds soon parted. And by the time the sun melted into the hot winds and its streams radiated to push the thermometer up to 120 degrees, I had packed and unfolded the first flaps of tent to start the new day. Between ethnomusicology, anthropology, and creative writing research, I had my hands full and two toddlers riding camelback.

How can she exist between parents, between countries?
