Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone is the largest and probably the most famous of our national parks. There is no other region like it. In the variety and power of its geysers, in the diversity of its wonders, it has no rival. The Park, second in historical rank, was created by act of Congress, in 1872, for the perpetual enjoyment of the people. Uncle Sam has made it convenient and comfortable for all who wish to come. Yellowstone National Park is situated in northwestern Wyoming and extends slightly into Idaho and Montana. It is about 62 miles long and 54 miles wide, and has an area of square miles. Its general physical character is that of a broad, volcanic plateau with an average elevation of feet, and surrounded by mountain ranges rising from to feet higher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yellowstone National Park: Historical and Descriptive As to the subject-matter itself, the author may properly repeat here from the preface of the previous edition that in every important respect the Yellowstone Park has so far fulfilled the expectation of its founders and has justified the wisdom of its creation. Our national parks are grow ing into an institution and the Yellowstone was the pioneer and remains the most important of them all. If o icial ambition for innovation and mercenary ambition for private gain are held under adequam restraint, there is no reason why it may not continue to the latest generation a genuine example of original nature - a benefit and an enjoyment, as the Act of Dedication puts it, to the people whose wisdom has preserved it to posterity. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yellowstone National Park HE Yellowstone is associated in the public mind with geysers only. Thousands even of those who, watches in hand, have hustled from sight to sight _over the usual stage schedules, bring home vivid impressions of little else. There never was a greater mistake. Were there no geysers, the Yellow stone watershed alone, with its glowing canyon, would be worth the national park. Were there also no canyon, the scenic wilderness and its incomparable wealth of wild-animal life would be worth the national park. Book Geological History of the Yellowstone National Park Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geological History of the Yellowstone National Park Classic Reprint written by A. Hague and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological History of the Yellowstone National Park The central portion of the Yellowstone Park is, essentially, a broad, elevated, volcanic plateau, between 7000 and 8500 feet above sea-level, and with an average elevation of about 8000 feet. Sur rounding it on the south, east, north, and northwest, are mountain ranges with culminating peaks and ridges rising from 2000 to 4000 feet above the general level of the enclosed table-land. For present purposes it is needless to confine ourselves strictly to legal boundaries, but rather to consider the entire region in its broader physical features. It is worthy of note, however, that by the proposed enlargement the protected area will agree closely with the geographical province. Book The Yellowstone National Park

Download or read book The Yellowstone National Park written by Hiram Martin Chittenden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yellowstone National Park: Historical and Descriptive; Illustrated With Maps, View and Portraits In submitting to the public this second revision of "The Yellowstone," reference to the author's official connection, now permanently severed, with the region to which it relates may not be out of place. It has proven a rule almost without exception that those who have been assigned to duty in the Park, whether in public or private capacity, have become enamored of the service there and have accepted its termination with feelings of affectionate regret. Such was emphatically the author's experience. A two years' detail (1891-92) as assistant to the officer in charge of road construction, developed an interest in that region which has never since diminished. The first edition of "The Yellowstone" (1895) was an outgrowth of that early acquaintance. Later, in 1899, after the close of the Spanish-American war, the author was again sent to the Park, this time in exclusive charge of the road work. By a fortunate combination of circumstances Congress was induced to give upward of a million dollars for the work during the next seven years and thus to make possible the development of a really comprehensive system of highways. This work, which embraced the construction, more or less complete, of about four hundred miles of mountain roads, was of absorbing interest, and it is a matter of no especial credit that the author should have given to it, from beginning to end, the utmost of his time and abilities. It was in the fullest sense a labor of love and to an unusual degree one of direct personal supervision. Disappointment there was, as in all similar work, in the never-ceasing, but rarely successful, effort to bridge completely the chasm between an ideal result and that which available resources permit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Wonderland, the Yellowstone National Park In a letter recently received he writes It may be proper to say, in excuse of the roughness of some of the sketches, that they are almost untouched travel sketches, quite half, if not more, of the Park ones being taken on the logger-head of the Mexican saddle of my Cayuse, for I often feared to dismount lest the lariat should break, and I should be left to 'weary plod my homeward way' with the thermometer drop, drop, dropping down to freezing point. You will agree with me that Mr. Thomas need have sent us no excuse the very want of finish in some of the pictures is one of their chiefest charms - they come, as it were, red-hot from the artist's anvil. One more preliminary statement - I have been greatly embarrassed 'by the magnitude of the task undertaken, and the following account will be found to contain a good deal that was necessarily omitted during the reading of the Paper.
