Margolin served in two armies in the First World War, the Australian and British, and was buried twice with full military honors, first in Australia, then Israel. Escaping the Russian pograms, he helped pioneer and defend the settlement of Rehovot in Palestine, and as an original ANZAC served with distinction at Gallipoli. He was recruited by Jabotinsky to take command in the Jewish Legion in Palestine, becoming the first Jewish district commander there since the time of Bar Kokhba. His men of the First Judeans put down the 1921 Arab May Day pogrom in Jaffe for which he was expelled from Palestine back to Australia.

Some 420,000 of her citizens fought in the islands off New Guinea, Gallipoli, the Western Front, and the Middle East. Among them was a relatively large chunk of the countrys small Jewish population. The precise number remains unknown since many enlisted as Christians. The Jewish story of World War I is far more complex than the current communal narrative, monopolised, as it is, by the superb military leadership of General Sir John Monash, and the avowals of passionate loyalty of Australian Jewry to king, country, and empire. It is claimed that this was manifest in its relatively large enlistment and war effort on the home front. At all times, an edgy Anglo-Australian Jewish leadership was looking over its shoulder worried by possible accusations of disloyalty. The sketchy account of the Australian-Jewish involvement in World War I is due to a lack of evidence from that era and little enthusiasm for collecting whatever was available subsequently. Much of what does exist lacks a grassroots Jewish voice, except for a few diaries and letters. Nonetheless, it is most likely that the capacity of Jewish communal leaders to influence the average Australian Jews attitude to enlistment or home front activities was minimal. One matter is certain, and that is that a strong belief in social integration helped prevent the formation of any communal organisation to care for ill and wounded Jewish veterans.

It covers the stories of a few dozen Jews who passed away in the Diaspora and later their remains were taken to be buried for the second time (and sometimes for the third) in Israel. These were Zionists and politicians, writers and poets, heroes and public activists whose common denominator was that they all passed away in the Diaspora, far and detached from the national homeland that they fought for before their tragic death. Only later, in an act of repair, their coffins were sent to be buried in the “sacred” Zionist soil, in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or Dgania. These graves became pilgrimage sites and contributed to the design of Israel’s landscape. The book examines how and why such great effort was made to bring their remains to Israel for reinterment, and how the funerals and graves of the public figures became state symbols and national instruments for establishing Israeli sovereignty over the land.

It covers Jews in various aspects of resistance in Greece and other concentration camps. The book is a contribution to the overall story of Greek resistance against the Nazi occupiers and provides hitherto unknown stories of their contributions to that fight. Based on interviews and archival research Bowman has assembled a preliminary list of over 650 individuals who fought or served with the Greek Resistance forces. These include andartes and andartissas, interpreters, recruiters, doctors, spies, nurses, organizers, and a number of non Greek Jews who volunteered or were trapped in Greece during the war years. While the murder of nearly 90% of Greek Jews by the Nazis has begun to enter the holocaust story, the participation of Greek Jews in the war against the Nazis is virtually unknown. Greek Jews actively fought in the war against the Italian and German invaders. Veterans and young Jewish males and females went to the mountains to fight or serve in various ways in the andartiko among the several Greek Resistance movements. Other Jews remained in urban areas where they joined different Resistance cells whether as active saboteurs or in leadership roles. A number of Jews appear on the payrolls of Force 133. Additionally Greek Jews participated in the Sonderkommando revolt in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp in October 1944 while others fought in the Warsaw revolt from August to October 1944.
