Book The Anti Slavery Movement Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Anti Slavery Movement Classic Reprint written by Frederick Douglass and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anti-Slavery Movement Ladies and Gentlemen: Had I consulted my own health, or the advice of my physician, I should have been elsewhere, and otherwise employed this evening. I am not well, and have not been so for several weeks. I have usually come to this platform to lecture on slavery - that darkest and hugest of all wrongs - the vilest (in the language of John Wesley) that ever saw the sun. But it has pleased the Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society to have presented here, during the winter, almost every phase of that terrible wrong; and I have, therefore, selected my topic in view of that tact. It will, probably, amount to the same thins; in the end. Some one has, happily, said, that it matters very little which path the traveller may take; he has but to go forward to go round the world. In like manner it may be said, that it matters little which path of inquiry a man may pursue, or which great moral or spiritual fact he may investigate; he has but to honestly persevere to find himself, at last, at the portals of the whole universe of truth, and speedily walking amidst its golden glories. The subject of my lecture this evening is, the nature, character, and history of the anti-slavery movement. Book Five Hundred Thousand Strokes for Freedom

Download or read book Five Hundred Thousand Strokes for Freedom written by Wilson Armistead and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Hundred Thousand Strokes for Freedom: A Series of Anti-Slavery Tracts, of Which Half a Million Are Now First Issued by the Friends of the Negro Whilst millions of our oppressed and manacled fellow-creatures are still groaning under the cruelties of slavery, and panting for deliverance from thraldom, no apology is thought requisite in presenting anything calculated to increase a feeling of sympathy for that portion of suffering humanity whose own voice has but little chance of being heard, and when it has an opportunity of being raised in self-defence, is too often but little regarded. It must be evident to the most superficial observer, that recent events have excited an awakened interest universally in behalf of the down-trodden slave. It is exceedingly desirable that this feeling should not be allowed to pass hastily away, but that the public mind should be kept alive to the great subject of the negro's wrongs, till such time as they are effectually redressed. Book Anti Slavery and Reform Papers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Anti Slavery and Reform Papers Classic Reprint written by Henry David Thoreau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anti-Slavery and Reform Papers The character and Opinions of Henry David Thoreau have for the most part been a stumbling-block to the judgment of his critics. As the early naturalists were puzzled to account for the peculiar structure of the bat, which did not readily adapt itself to their established system of classification, so the literary critics have been perplexed and baffled by the elusive qualities of this unique personality, who fiits unclassified along the con fines of civilization and wildness. One who was bred to no profession; who never married; who lived alone; who never went to church; who never voted; who re fused to pay a tax to the State; who ate no flesh, who drank no wine, who never knew the use of tobacco and though a naturalist, used neither trap nor gun, -it is evident that such a man must appear unreasonable and contumacious to those who have never seriously ques tioned the shibboleths of social order and respectability. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Platform, or Manual of Southern Sentiment on the Subject of Slavery To denounce Slavery in one breath. And to inslst upon constitutional guarantees for its maintenance in the next, may seem inconsistent to the minds of ardent anti-slavery men of the present day; but they should recollect that the Whole question of State Rights is involved in this one of Slavery, and that to surrender the sovereignty ofthe States in this instance, is to open the way to consolidation And, further, allowing Slavery to be an unmitigated ev1l, as the people of the South generally did at that time, they Justly regarded themselves as better qualified '0 apply the remedy than the people of distant States, who were not particularly interested in the matter. I think that reasonable anti-slavery men, upon cool reflection, will concede this point. My object in making this publication is not to produce sectional feeling, but to awaken in Southern minds those noble and generous sentiments of freedom which animated their ancestors.
