Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anthology of Humorous Verse Poet. I have been more influenced by the treat ment - and occasionally by the subject - Of a poem than by its authorship or date. In the early days, soon after Chaucer, we are in an epoch of rough physical humour, of drinking songs, of simple fables; when law-suits and money, the unknown king and his outspoken subject, the Church and the Devil, provided the stock elements of laughter. There was a directness and a vital strength about these singers which I seem to see reflected in the bold detail-carvings of the Gothic Cathedrals, where Humour treads upon the heels of the Grotesque, and laughter is sometimes very near akin to tears. Not until the spacious days of Elizabethan literature does this weight of inevitable realism begin to lift. Soon afterwards, the Cavaliers were among the most delightful lyrists in the world, but rather in the passionate than the humorous Vein and after these again there is an interval, an interregnum, in which it may be recognised that the old style is dead, and the new one has not been born. Of this is the long newsletter, meant to be witty, and occasionally humorous. But the charm of the ancient days had vanished, without being as yet replaced by any compensating skill. The old stories had all been told, and there was no one to touch them with a new life or to find fresh sub jects for his verse. The unfortunate repetition which comes from lack of ideas became common, and the Primitive Jest flourished in the land only not perishing outright because, in Rabelais phrase, it was in one form or another an essential human attribute. As Mr. Andrew Lang has sung. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Humorous Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Humorous Poems Classic Reprint written by William Michael Rossetti and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Humorous Poems Humour Is, In an intense degree, at once individual and expansive. It depends upon a specialty of character; it affects all persons with whom it comes in contact; and it produces in the humourist's own mind a recast of all his experiences - they become to him very different from what they are 7567' se, or what they would seem were he not a humourist. If he is furthermore a humourist with a gift of expression or of writing, he naturally produces something that has a avour of its own-something fairly proper to himself, and (in the higher classes of humouristic writing) genuinely original. While humour is thus, as I have termed it, expansive, Wit is intensive or incisive. Humour mo difies its subject-matter - and cannot help doing so, because the humourist is compelled to see everything through the spectacles of his own strong individuality: Wit irradiates or illustrates its subject-matter, but leaves it substantially unmodified. Book The Humorous Poetry of the English Language From Chaucer to Saxe

This book was released on 2018-07-07 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Humorous Poetry of the English Language; from Chaucer to Saxe By James Parton Holmes, Saxe, and Lowell are, therefore, only REPRESENTED in this collection. To have done more than fairly represent them, had been to infringe rights which are doubly sacred, because they are not protected by law. To have done less would have deprived the reader of a most convenient means of observing that, in a kind of composition confessed to be among the most difficult, our native wits are not excelled by foreign. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
