This book was released on 1993 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of new translations of masterpieces of German literature and criticism written between 1775 and 1836, selected not only for their literary merit but for their illumination of important literary and intellectual currents of the time -- storm and stress, classicism, and various developments of romanticism. The volume, with its extensive introduction and appendix surveying German philosophy of the period, provides the best introduction available for English readers interested in this pivotal period. Concentrates on less-readily available works, especially a substantial selection on lyric poems. The translations are all new and accompanied by facing-page texts in the original German.

Book Goethe in English

Download or read book Goethe in English written by Derek Glass and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2005 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography was commissioned by the English Goethe Society as a contribution to the celebration in 1999 of the 250th anniversary of Goethes birth. It sets out to record translations of his works into English that have been published in the twentieth century, up to and including material published in that anniversary year. It aims to serve as wide a constituency as possible, be it as a simple reference tool for tracing a translation of a given work or as a documentary source for specialized studies of Goethe reception in the English-speaking world. The work records publications during the century, not merely translations that originated during this period. It includes numerous reprintings of older material, as well as some belated first publications of translations from the nineteenth century. It shows how frequent and how long enduring was the recourse of publishers and anthologists to a Goethe Victorian in diction, a signal factor in perceptions and misperceptions. Derek Glass was putting the finishing touches to the bibliography at the time of his sudden death in March 2004. Colleagues at Kings College London have edited the final manuscript, which is now published jointly by the English Goethe Society and the Modern Humanities Research Association both as a worthy commemoration of Goethes anniversary and as a tribute to Derek himself.

Book The Romantic Tradition in Germany

Download or read book The Romantic Tradition in Germany written by Ronald Taylor and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1970, this book surveys the central philosophical and aesthetic doctrines which characterize German Romanticism. A selection of literary, philosophical and political essays by some of the most important German Romantic thinkers illustrates the principal themes: these range from philosophical idealism and aesthetic subjectivism to folklore and emergent German nationalism, from exotica and medievalism to irrationality and the metaphysics of music. Introductory essays explain the significance of the particular aspects of the Romantic tradition which are revealed in each passage, and commentaries not only elucidate allusions and references which are not immediately identifiable, but draw attention to wider issues, either in the work of that author or in the context of 19th Century German culture as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... SECTION VIII THE SIDE LIGHTS Strictly speaking, literary "schools" have not been numerous in Germany. There have not been many instances where a number of poets--more than two--holding a common doctrine, accepting the same teachings, exhibiting in practice the same general methods and intellectual bent, have banded together and made propaganda for a common cause. The very fact that a man is a poet is proof positive that he is different from other men, including other poets, and there never were even two poets exactly or even nearly alike. To have a successful school, there must be good teamwork; and to have this, a long series of similarities on the part of the participants is necessary. We can speak of the First Silesian School (1625-75), the Second Silesian School (1650-1700), the (c)otthtger ain (1767-1800), Storm and Stress (176787), the Berlin-Jena Romantic School (1798-1801), the Heidelberg Romantic School (1806-08) and Young Germany (1830-48) with more or less propriety, and with that the list of " schools" is about complete. Goethe and Schiller established a Classical School (1794-1805) at Weimar only in the sense that they wrote poetry of a high order, which found many imitators and many more readers and admirers. But it is with a school as with a triangle, or with jealousy: it requires three parts to complete it. And then a school is unlike a triangle, or jealousy, in that more than three parts will tend to make it more nearly perfect, more enduring and effective. In the case of the twenty-eight poets, grouped under this rubric, we have to do with a number of men each one of whom went his own way and accomplished something that makes him unforgetable. They lived in the age of Romanticism and were not merely influenced.

Book Heinrich von Kleist

Download or read book Heinrich von Kleist written by Jeffrey L High and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an authorial class with dramatists and authors of literary prose such as Goethe, Schiller, Thomas Mann, Brecht, and Kafka, Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) remains prominent in international evaluations of artistic genius when measured by enduring popular and artistic reception; legal, philosophical, and scientific criticism; and resonance of political rage. Scholars have long been fascinated by Kleist’s biography and works, in no small part due to his influence on authors, philosophers, political thinkers, and filmmakers, who regard Kleist as among the most accessible of “classic” artists — one whose relevance requires neither theoretical introduction nor literary-historical justification. The present volume addresses two centuries of engagement with Kleist and his works from an angle that has proven most important to their popular canonical status — his artistic and political legacies. What mattered to Kleist has mattered to centuries of readers, and thus all the more to artists and thinkers with similarly urgent messages to convey.
