Book An Annotated Bibliography on Ibn S n

Download or read book An Annotated Bibliography on Ibn S n written by Jules L. Janssens and published by Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (ACMRS). This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original Annotated Bibliography on Ibn Sina -- covering 1970 to 1989 -- was published in 1991 by Leuven University Press, and the First Supplement -- covering 1990 to 1994 -- was published in 1999 by the Fédération Internationale des Instituts d'Études médiévales. This Second Supplement covers fifteen years of research on Ibn Sina (1995 to 2009) and deals with publications that appeared not only in the West, but also elsewhere in the world. This Second Supplement opens with a detailed presentation of new editions and/or translations (as well as of reprints of older ones) of Ibn Sıˉnaˉ's major and minor works and surveys books and papers related to Ibn Sina's life and works. It extensively deals with studies analyzing and discussing aspects of Ibn Sina's thought in its different aspects: logic, noetics, linguistics, aesthetics, psychology, politics, ethics, metaphysics, mysticism, natural sciences, astronomy, mathematics, music, and medicine. This bibliography not only annotates or summarizes each single publication, written in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, or in Arabic or Persian, but it also identifies each publication's most innovative ideas and assesses its specific contributions in a brief but clear and succinct way. Moreover, it offers references to publications in many other languages, including Turkish, Russian, Uzbek, and Japanese, among others and provides a clear, concise, and comprehensive work-instrument for all future research on Ibn Sina.

Book Ibn Sina s Remarks and Admonitions Physics and Metaphysics

Download or read book Ibn Sina s Remarks and Admonitions Physics and Metaphysics written by and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Al-Isharat wal-Tanbihat (Remarks and Admonitions) is one of the most mature and comprehensive philosophical works by Ibn Sina (Avicenna, 980–1037). Grounded in an exploration of logic (which Ibn Sina described as the gate to knowledge) and happiness (the ultimate human goal), the text illuminates the divine, the human being, and the nature of things through a wide-ranging discussion of topics. The sections of Physics and Metaphysics deal with the nature of bodies and souls as well as existence, creation, and knowledge. Especially important are Ibn Sina's views of God's knowledge of particulars, which generated much controversy in medieval Islamic and Christian philosophical and theological circles and provoked a strong rejection by eleventh-century philosopher al-Ghazali. This book provides the first annotated English translation of Physics and Metaphysics and edits the original Arabic text on which the translation is based. It begins with a detailed analysis of the text, followed by a translation of the three classes or groups of ideas in the Physics (On the Substance of Bodies, On the Directions and Their Primary and Secondary Bodies, and On the Terrestrial and Celestial Souls) and the four in the Metaphysics (On Existence and Its Causes, Creation Ex Nihilo and Immediate Creation, On Ends, on Their Principles, and on the Arrangement [of Existence], and On Abstraction. The Metaphysics closes with a significant discussion of the concepts of providence, good, and evil, which Ibn Sina uses to introduce a theodicy. Researchers, faculty, and students in philosophy, theology, religion, and intellectual history will find in this work a useful and necessary source for understanding Ibn Sina's philosophical thought and, more generally, the medieval Islamic and Christian study of nature, the world beyond, psychology, God, and the concept of evil.

These include developments in society and population, religious thought and Islamic law, Muslim views of modern politics and economics, education and the arts, cinema and new media. The essays, which highlight the diversity and richness of Islamic civilization, engage with regions outside the Middle East as well as within Islam's historic heartland.
