Book An Annotated Bibliography of the Cunner Tautogolabrus Adspersus Walbaum

Download or read book An Annotated Bibliography of the Cunner Tautogolabrus Adspersus Walbaum written by Fredric M. Serchuk and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cunner, Tautogolabrus adspersus (Walbaum), also known as the chogset or bergall, is commonly found around wharves and docks and on rocky bottoms along the northeastern coast of North America. It is distributed from Newfoundland southward to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, with a major center of abundance in the Massachusetts Bay area. In these northern waters, cunners are most numerous in shallow inshore areas, although they are frequently taken near wrecks and shoals up to 30 miles at sea. There is little evidence in support of seasonal migration patterns and individuals remain near their areas during their formative years. At one time, the cunner was a favorite fish of New England anglers. During the 1880's between 200,000 and 300,000 pounds of cunner were taken in the New England commercial harvest. However, since the turn of the century, commercial catches have been negligible because of poor demand.

Book Distribution Relative Abundance and Movement of Skipjack Tuna Katsuwonus Pelamis in the Pacific Ocean Based on Japanese Tuna Longline Catches 1964 67

Download or read book Distribution Relative Abundance and Movement of Skipjack Tuna Katsuwonus Pelamis in the Pacific Ocean Based on Japanese Tuna Longline Catches 1964 67 written by Walter M. Matsumoto and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catch data of the Japanese tuna longline fishery from 1964 to 1967 were analyzed to determine the distribution, abundance, and movement of skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis, in offshore waters of the Pacific Ocean. Large skipjack tuna, as well as larvae, were found to be concentrated mainly in the east central equatorial Pacific. Movement of skip-jack tuna stocks was determined by following the shifting of high-CPUE (catch per unit effort) cells from one quarter to the next. The apparent movement of skipjack tuna stocks in the Pacific appeared to coincide with the circulation of the major ocean currents; counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere and clockwise in the northern hemisphere, except in the eastern Pacific where the current flow is counterclockwise. The movement patterns of high CPUE suggested that skipjack tuna adults or their progeny could move from one area to the next. The movement pattern was used also to determine the probable migratory routes followed by skipjack tuna tagged in the eastern Pacific and recovered near the Hawaiian and Christmas islands.

Book Summer Benthic Fish Fauna of Sandy Hook Bay New Jersey

Download or read book Summer Benthic Fish Fauna of Sandy Hook Bay New Jersey written by Stuart J. Wilk and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-eight species and 25 families of fishes were captured during an otter trawl survey in Sandy Hook Bay, N.J., during July to October 1970. Distribution, abundance, length and age composition, and environmental preferences were analyzed for the more numerous species. Winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus; striped searobin, Prionotus evolans; windowpane, Scophthalmus aquosus; and northern searobin, Prionotus carolinus, accounted for 68.3% by number and 66.4% by weight of the total survey catch.

Book Seasonal Distributions of Larval Flatfishes Pleuronectiformes on the Continental Shelf Between Cape Cod Massachusetts and Cape Lookout North Carolina 1965 66

Download or read book Seasonal Distributions of Larval Flatfishes Pleuronectiformes on the Continental Shelf Between Cape Cod Massachusetts and Cape Lookout North Carolina 1965 66 written by W. G. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larval flatfishes, representing 4 families, 17 genera, and 15 species, were identified from collections taken during a 1-yr survey designed to locate spawning grounds and trace dispersion of fish eggs and larvae on the continental shelf. Most flatfishes began spawning in the spring, a time of marked seasonal temperature change. The seasonal distribution of larvae indicated that: 1) bothids had longer spawning seasons than pleuronectids; 2) pleuronectids spawned largely in the northern half of the survey area during the spring; 3) most bothids spawned in the southern half, beginning in spring and continuing through early fall; 4) although cynoglossids spawned incidentally off North Carolina, most of their larvae were transported into the survey area from spawning grounds south of Cape Lookout; 5) the few representatives of the family Soleidae originated south of Cape Lookout; 6) spawning that began in the spring proceeded from south to north as the season progressed, but spawning that began in the fall proceeded from north to south, suggesting that the onset of spawning is triggered by spring warming and fall cooling; 7) most species spawned within a relatively narrow range of temperature; 8) salinity had no apparent influence on spawning.

Book Seasonal abundance and distribution of zooplankton fish eggs and fish larvae in the eastern Gulf of Mexico 1972 74

Download or read book Seasonal abundance and distribution of zooplankton fish eggs and fish larvae in the eastern Gulf of Mexico 1972 74 written by Edward D. Houde and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zooplankton volumes and abundance of fish eggs and fish larvae were determined for stations on 12 cruises to the western Florida continental shelf. Contour charts of zooplankton volumes and of ichthyoplankton abundance are presented. A marked seasonality was observed for zooplankton and ichthyoplankton, highest zooplankton volumes and ichthyoplankton abundance occurring during May through September. Zooplankton volumes were highest and spawning by fishes most intense in the northern half of the study area (north of lat. 27°15ʹN). Fish larvae abundance (number under 10 m2 of sea surface) was highest at stations deeper than 50 m. Simple correlations among biological variables showed fish egg abundance-zooplankton volumes and fish egg abundance-fish larvae abundance to be positively correlated on most cruises. No clear relationships were observed between abundance or concentration of biological variables and temperature or salinity.
