Book The Fire Still Burns

Download or read book The Fire Still Burns written by Chilco Choate and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2001 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old Nero, the biggest grizzly of the Chilcotin; Siberia, the too-friendly black wolf; and Lucky, the not-so-lucky guide are some of the characters in Chilco Choate's latest collection of yarns and pithy observations from BC's backcountry. Changing some names to protect the guilty, he skewers the once-a-year hunters who, stricken by "buck fever," blast away like they're at a target range then wonder why their guide won't take them out after big game. This long-time hunter also reveals how he's maybe softening with age, enjoying time in the bush as much with a camera as with a gun and sometimes cheering on the prey instead of the predator. There are tried-and-true packing tips for readers planning their own expedition to the backcountry, a discussion of fire power, and culinary ideas sure to whet the appetite of a trail-weary traveller, as well as a few yarns about memorable bush-camp meals that maybe weren't quite so tasty. There are also close encounters with wolves and cougars, and fascinating details on the lives and behaviour of some of BC's most revered critters. For a change of pace, Chilco describes a winter he spent away from his beloved Chilcotin, feeding herds of elk in the East Kootenay. This gives him a chance to examine the resource-use plans too often dictated by ranchers and foresters who turn a blind eye to conservation and the rights of the wildlife that was on the range first. Chilco Choate first came to the Chilcotin in 1952 to try cowboying. Enticed by the lure of the great plateau, he was soon leading both seasoned hunters and hesitant dudes through the back country by day and spinning campfire stories by night. Chilco's previous book for Heritage House, Born for the Wild Country, tells of his early years, hunting and playing hooky along the Nicomekl River near White Rock, BC. In Unfriendly Neighbours, his first book, he describes his volatile relationship with the Gang Ranch.

Book Notes from the Burning Age

Book excerpt: “ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE READ IN RECENT YEARS. THOUGHT PROVOKING, IMAGINATIVE AND PACKS A HELL OF AN EMOTIONAL PUNCH.” —Adrian Tchaikovsky, author of Children of Time From one of the most imaginative writers of her generation comes an extraordinary vision of the future… Ven was once a holy man, a keeper of ancient archives. It was his duty to interpret archaic texts, sorting useful knowledge from the heretical ideas of the Burning Age—a time of excess and climate disaster. For in Ven's world, such material must be closely guarded so that the ills that led to that cataclysmic era can never be repeated. But when the revolutionary Brotherhood approaches Ven, pressuring him to translate stolen writings that threaten everything he once held dear, his life will be turned upside down. Torn between friendship and faith, Ven must decide how far he's willing to go to save this new world—and how much he is willing to lose. “A riveting tale of subterfuge and deadly self-indulgence” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) from award-winning author Claire North, Notes from the Burning Age puts dystopian fiction in a whole new light. Book The Fire that Burns Deep Within

Download or read book The Fire that Burns Deep Within written by Lillian Rodriguez and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fire that Burns Deep Within is the third poetry book by Lillian Rodriguez. Depicting the anger, love and passion grief is part of. Any type of grief whether a loved one or any type of loss and the feelings behind that is what I tried to capture. I wrote this for anyone who has felt anger and can relate to how I feel. Anger, love and passion is the fire that burns deep within all of us. This element is crucial in our lives and we can use it to fuel us and can be used for positivity and eventually healing. I hope you are inspired as I was in writing this book as well as the first installment Reflections of A Muse and the sequel to that The Moon and The Waves. This completes the trio. Enjoy.

Named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, People, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, TIME, The A.V. Club, Buzzfeed, and PopSugar “I can’t believe how good this book is.... It’s wholly original. It’s also perfect.... Wilson writes with such a light touch.... The brilliance of the novel [is] that it distracts you with these weirdo characters and mesmerizing and funny sentences and then hits you in a way you didn’t see coming. You’re laughing so hard you don’t even realize that you’ve suddenly caught fire.” —Taffy Brodesser-Akner, author of Fleishman is in Trouble, New York Times Book Review From the New York Times bestselling author of The Family Fang, a moving and uproarious novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with a remarkable ability. Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal and they’ve barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help. Madison’s twin stepkids are moving in with her family and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there’s a catch: the twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it’s the truth. Thinking of her dead-end life at home, the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other—and stay cool—while also staying out of the way of Madison’s buttoned-up politician husband. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lillian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need her—urgently and fiercely. Couldn’t this be the start of the amazing life she’d always hoped for? With white-hot wit and a big, tender heart, Kevin Wilson has written his best book yet—a most unusual story of parental love.

Book excerpt: An NPR Best Book of the Year • A Buzzfeed Best Book of the Year On Halloween, 1991, a popular high school basketball star ventures into the woods near Battle Creek, Pennsylvania, and disappears. Three days later, he’s found with a bullet in his head and a gun in his hand—a discovery that sends tremors through this conservative community, already unnerved by growing rumors of Satanic worship in the region. In the wake of this incident, bright but lonely Hannah Dexter is befriended by Lacey Champlain, a dark-eyed, Cobain-worshiping bad influence in lip gloss and Doc Martens. The charismatic, seductive Lacey forges a fast, intimate bond with the impressionable Dex, making her over in her own image and unleashing a fierce defiance that neither girl expected. But as Lacey gradually lures Dex away from her safe life into a feverish spiral of obsession, rebellion, and ever greater risk, an unwelcome figure appears on the horizon—and Lacey’s secret history collides with Dex’s worst nightmare. By turns a shocking story of love and violence and an addictive portrait of the intoxication of female friendship, set against the unsettled backdrop of a town gripped by moral panic, Girls on Fire is an unflinching and unforgettable snapshot of girlhood: girls lost and found, girls strong and weak, girls who burn bright and brighter—and some who flicker away.

Book excerpt: A rich, nuanced exploration of women's anger from a diverse group of writers Women are furious, and we're not keeping it to ourselves any longer. We're expected to be composed and compliant, but in a world that would strip us of our rights, disparage our contributions, and deny us a seat at the table of authority, we're no longer willing to quietly seethe behind tight smiles. We're ready to burn it all down. In this ferocious collection of essays, twenty-two writers explore how anger has shaped their lives: author of the New York Times bestseller The Empathy Exams Leslie Jamison confesses that she used to insist she wasn't angry -- until she learned that she was; Melissa Febos, author of the Lambda Literary Award-winning memoir Abandon Me, writes about how she discovered that anger can be an instrument of power; editor-in-chief of Bitch Media Evette Dionne dismantles the "angry Black woman" stereotype; and more. Broad-ranging and cathartic, Burn It Down is essential reading for any woman who has scorched with rage -- and is ready to claim her right to express it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we explore the aim, expressions and outcomes of God’s anger in the Hebrew Bible. We consider divine anger against the backdrop of human anger in order to discern those aspects of it that are recognizably human from those facets of it that are distinctly divine. Furthermore, we examine passages from a range of literary contexts across major biblical collections in order to distinguish those features of divine anger that are elemental to its definition from those that are limited to individual collections. The sum of these conclusions forms our answer to the question: What does the Bible mean when it describes God as angry?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an attempt to uncover the structure of three emotion concepts: anger, pride and love. The results indicate that the conceptual structure associated with these emotions consists of four parts: (1) a system of metaphors, (2) a system of metonymies, (3) a system of related concepts, and (4) a category of cognitive models, with a prototypical model in the center. This goes against an influential view of the structure of concepts in linguistics, psychology, anthropology, according to which the structure of a concept can be represented by a small number of sense components.
