Book excerpt: "From Lake Erie to the Ohio River, Ohio offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities in local, state and national parks, recreation areas, and preserves. Outdoor recreation involves many activities, including walking, fishing, boating, cycling, and playing sports. Building on the successes of past outdoor recreation surveys conducted in 1997, 2006, and 2013, the George Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs (GVS) at Ohio University was contracted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Office of Real Estate and Land Management (ODNR) to perform an updated survey in 2017. Ohio residents were electronically queried by household on their opinions on how to improve, sustain, and develop outdoor recreation experiences and opportunities on public land in their state. Similar to past SCORP surveys that investigated state and ODNR regional trends, the 2017 survey covered topics of interest, participation, satisfaction, and expenditures in recreational activities, as well as barriers to recreational activity participation and preferences for the allocation of taxpayer money on public outdoor recreation. With over 5,000 electronic submissions, this survey had an additional focus on urban and rural areas. Information compiled from this Ohio Resident Outdoor Recreation Survey will be incorporated into ODNR's 2018 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP)."--Page 10.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the occupational choices of typically developing children participating in an outdoor recreation program. This study focused on the participants' own experiences in an outdoor program and examined the occupational choices of the children as well as influences on their choices. The outdoor recreation program that was used for this study was provided by the Boone County Parks Department in Burlington, Kentucky. The study design was mini-ethnography. Two children and their parents, and two staff of the park program were interviewed, and additional data was collected in the form of field notes, observations, and artifacts. Six main themes emerged that help to describe the occupational choices of children participating in an outdoor recreation program. These themes were activity, family structure, occupational choices, new occupational opportunities, participation, and socialization. This study suggests that the occupational choices of children are unique to each child; however, their choices are strongly influenced by the environment of the parks program and influences of their family and friends. Understanding these influences on a child's decision making may help program planners improve all of the park's programs.
