Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Analytical Sketch of the Young Men's Christian Association in North America From 1851 to 1876: Together With Contemporary Essays, and a Statistical Statement of the Results of Its Work From 1876 to 1901 He was a delegate from that association to the Boston, Philadelphia, Albany and Montreal international conventions, and was a member of the International Committee from 1869 to 1875. In all these positions he was active, attentive, and exceedingly useful. It hardly need be said that this period of official activity embraced prac tically the most trying time in the history of the associations on this continent Indeed when Dr. Morse became the treasurer of the New York association its fortunes were at the lowest ebb. It was in debt, it was not popular, its membership had diminished, and it was proposed by some of the friends of the association to abandon the effort. Dr. Morse was convinced of the value of the institution, insisted strongly upon its continuance, and offered the earliest pledge received, giving what he deemed his proper proportion for the payment of the out standing debts. The debts were paid, and the association of New York City started at that time upon its unexampled career of prosperity and usefulness.
