Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Analytical Key to Some of the Common Flowering Plants of the Rocky Mountain Region There are approximately 3,000 species of indigenous flowering plants in that portion of the United States known as the Rocky Mountain region. Many of these by reason of their abundance, attractiveness, and conspicuous characters afford material both suitable and available for use in the introductory courses in botany in high schools and colleges. In spite of the fact that botany to-day must take cognizance of several new phases of the subject, it must still be admitted that a certain amount of work in systematic botany offers a point of contact with Nature that is of inestimable value. But justice to the co-ordinate and equally important divisions of the subject requires that systematic botany should take no more than a co-ordinate place. For various reasons it has been found inexpedient in many instances to attempt the use of the standard manuals. It is hoped that this brief synoptical Key may meet the needs of such courses, and that the beginner, discovering for himself the names of a few of the common plants of his neighborhood, may develop an interest in his flora that will later make him, in some cases, a critical student of it. This booklet is not offered as a substitute for a manual of the region, but rather, as an introduction, which will prepare the student for the better use of a manual. It seems best, therefore, to include only the commoner species, and especially those that blossom during the spring and early summer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Plains Horticulture explores the significant, civilizing role that horticulture has played in the development of farmsteads and rural and urban communities on the High Plains portions of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, drawing on both the science and the application of science practiced since 1840. Freeman explores early efforts to supplement native and imported foodstuffs, state and local encouragement to plant trees, the practice of horticulture at the Union Colony of Greeley, the pioneering activities of economic botanists Charles Bessey (in Nebraska) and Aven Nelson (in Wyoming), and the shift from food production to community beautification as the High Plains were permanently settled and became more urbanized. In approaching the history of horticulture from the perspective of local and unofficial history, Freeman pays tribute to the tempered idealism, learned pragmatism, and perseverance of individuals from all walks of life seeking to create livable places out of the vast, seemingly inhospitable High Plains. He also suggests that, slowly but surely, those that inhabit them have been learning to adjust to the limits of that fragile land. High Plains Horticulture will appeal to not only scientists and professionals but also gardening enthusiasts interested in the history of their hobby on the High Plains.

Download or read book Textbook of Botany written by Charles Elmer Allen and published by . This book was released on 1917 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Textbook of Botany: There are such wide differences of opinion regarding the proper content of an elementary course in botany that no teacher would venture to put forth a particular selection of facts and principles as the only one wisely to be made from the great body of knowledge concerning plants. The present writers are quite uninclined to adopt such an attitude toward their own choice; still less would they insist upon the precise order in which the materials they have selected should be presented. We are convinced, however, that an introductory course can best be centered about a fairly intensive study of a small number of plants, and that an attempt at a more desultory treatment of the subject must prove unsatisfactory. The plants used as types should be easily available; and so far as possible they should be selected from among those that already have definite meanings to the pupil, either because of their familiarity or because of their utility. In addition, the predominance and the practical significance of the seed plants may be recognized by devoting some time to a study of their divers forms and uses; and in this study, too, illustrations should be drawn chiefly from those plants of which the pupil sees or hears most in his everyday life. At whatever point in the course this latter work is done, it should have been preceded by an intensive study of the life of at least one particular seed plant. The present book offers a sufficient amount of work for a year's course. Probably all teachers will agree that a secondary school course in botany should not occupy less time than this, although, unfortunately, the ideal is often impossible of attainment. The order of presentation here adopted is that which will probably, in general, be most satisfactory in schools that begin the study of botany in the fall.
