Book excerpt: A numerical method for solving the equations for laminar, transitional, and turbulent compressible boundary layers for either planar or axisymmetric flows is presented. The fully developed turbulent region is treated by replacing the Reynolds stress terms with an eddy viscosity model. The mean properties of the transitional boundary layer are calculated by multiplying the eddy viscosity by an intermittency function based on the statistical production and growth of the turbulent spots. A specifiable turbulent Prandtl number relates the turbulent flux of heat to the eddy viscosity. A three-point implicit finite-difference scheme is used to solve the system of equations. The momentum and energy equations are solved simultaneously without iteration. Numerous test cases are compared with experimental data for supersonic and hypersonic flows; these cases include flows with both favorable and mildly unfavorable pressure gradient histories, mass flux at the wall, and traverse curvature.

Book excerpt: Given a Fortran code that solved for the characteristics of a laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layer, the problem was to modify the existing program to predict the boundary layer over a flat plate and sharp nosed axisymmetric cone with mass transfer as a boundary condition at the surface of the model. The surface of the model was maintained at a constant temperature, and only the cases in which air was the transferred gas were studied. To solve this problem the boundary layer was described by the standard boundary layer equations for continuity, momentum, and energy. Incorporating mass transfer as a boundary condition, the governing equations underwent the transformation of Probstein-Elliott and Levy-Lees. The resulting equations and boundary conditions were solved by finite differencing techniques for nondimensionalized velocity components and temperature at a finite number of nodes in the boundary layer field of flow.

Book excerpt: In the present report an investigation is made on a flat plate in a two-dimensional compressible flow of the effect of compressibility and heating on the turbulent frictional drag coefficient in the boundary layer of an airfoil or wing radiator. The analysis is based on the Prandtl-Karman theory of the turbulent boundary later and the Stodola-Crocco, theorem on the linear relation between the total energy of the flow and its velocity. Formulas are obtained for the velocity distribution and the frictional drag law in a turbulent boundary later with the compressibility effect and heat transfer taken into account. It is found that with increase of compressibility and temperature at full retardation of the flow (the temperature when the velocity of the flow at a given point is reduced to zero in case of an adiabatic process in the gas) at a constant R (sub x), the frictional drag coefficient C (sub f) decreased, both of these factors acting in the same sense.

Book excerpt: The report summarizes the results obtained from a three year analytical investigation of transient laminar and steady turbulent boundary layers for incompressible, two-dimensional flow. The analysis of these two classes of boundary-layer flows is based upon a solution of the appropriate partial differential equations by an approximation technique, the method of weighted residuals. Results were obtained for the transient laminar flow over a semi-infinite flat plate for both the boundary-layer equations and a modification to these equations which includes an axial diffusion term. For turbulent flows, several different boundary-layer prediction methods were developed by utilizing different turbulent shear stress models. In addition, a unified comparison of some thirty local and global shear stress models was made by comparing the predicted shear stress profiles with twelve carefully selected experimental studies taken from the literature. On the basis of this comparison, eleven different shear models were incorporated into computation schemes using the method of weighted residuals and the resulting calculations were compared in terms of computed values of the boundary-layer parameters. Book excerpt: A generalized form of the Coles compressibility transformation is utilized to analyze compressible turbulent boundary-layer flows. The generalization in the transformation is distinguished by specifying a stretching parameter that depends upon both space variables rather than on only the streamwise coordinate. This modification is shown to eliminate the distortion observed in the wake region of the transformed velocity profiles. For zero pressure gradient flows, predictions based upon the analysis are consistently superior with predictions due to Spalding-Chi and Baronti-Libby. A wide range of experimental data have been examined with Mach numbers ranging as high as 8, wall to free stream total temperature ratios as low as 0.25 and momentum thickness Reynolds numbers up to approximately one million.
