Book An Analytical Study of V STOL Handling Qualities in Hover and Transition

Download or read book An Analytical Study of V STOL Handling Qualities in Hover and Transition written by R. L. Stapleford and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hover analysis considers pilot attitude and position control tasks in the presence of horizontal gusts. The effects of each of the stability derivatives on the difficulty of the control tasks and on the closed-loop gust responses are determined. It is clearly shown that the handling qualities studies of control sensitivity and angular damping must consider the influences of M sub u (or L sub v) and should include gust inputs. These conclusions are substantiated by previous variable-stability-helicopter experiments. The effects of vehicle size and geometry are investigated by several approaches. The key result of increasing size is found to be a reduction in M sub u and L sub v which can, in turn, lower the requirements for control power and damping. The handling qualities during transition of two vehicles, a tilt duct and a tilt wing, which were previously tested on a simulator are analyzed. It is shown that both trim control and perturbations about the trim conditions must be considered. In fact, part of the increased difficulty in landing transitions, in comparison with takeoff transitions, is due to more difficult trim control; the much more stringent position control requirements in landing are also a contributing factor.

Book An Investigation of Large Aircraft Handling Qualities

Download or read book An Investigation of Large Aircraft Handling Qualities written by Richard D. Joyce and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical technique for investigating transport aircraft handling qualities is exercised in a study using models of two such vehicles, a Boeing 747 and Lockheed C-5A. Two flight conditions are employed for climb and directional tasks, and a third included for a flare task. The analysis technique is based upon a "structural model" of the human pilot developed by Hess. The associated analysis procedure has been discussed previously in the literature, but centered almost exclusively on the characteristics of high-performance fighter aircraft. The handling qualities rating level (HQRL) and pilot induced oscillation tendencies rating level (PIORL) are predicted for nominal configurations of the aircraft and for "damaged" configurations where actuator rate limits are introduced as nonlinearites. It is demonstrated that the analysis can accommodate nonlinear pilot/vehicle behavior and do so in the context of specific flight tasks, yielding estimates of handling qualities, pilot-induced oscillation tendencies and upper limits of task performance. A brief human-in-the-loop tracking study was performed to provide a limited validation of the pilot model employed.

Book Aircraft Handling Qualities

Download or read book Aircraft Handling Qualities written by MS. John Hodgkinson and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1999 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a readable introduction to handling qualities, the combination of pilot acceptability and piloted performance with stability and control. It adopts the analytical and qualitative standpoints needed for handling qualities analysis and design of fixed-wing aircraft. Although there are several texts on stability and control, until now none has provided insight into the piloting concerns that have affected the success of recent fly-by-wire aircraft developments.

Book Analytical Study of Ride Smoothing Benefits of Control System Configurations Optimized for Pilot Handling Qualities

Download or read book Analytical Study of Ride Smoothing Benefits of Control System Configurations Optimized for Pilot Handling Qualities written by Bruce G. Powers and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical study was conducted to evaluate the relative improvements in aircraft ride qualities that resulted from utilizing several control law configurations that were optimized for pilot handling qualities only. The airplane configuration used was an executive jet transport in the approach configuration. The control law configurations included the basic system, a rate feedback system, three command augmentation systems (rate command, attitude command, and rate command/attitude hold), and a control wheel steering system. Both the longitudinal and lateral directional axes were evaluated. A representative example of each control law configuration was optimized for pilot handling qualities on a fixed base simulator. The root mean square airplane responses to turbulence were calculated, and predictions of ride quality ratings were computed by using three models available in the literature.

Book The Flight Investigation and Analysis of Longitudinal Handling Qualities of STOL Aircraft on Landing Approach

Download or read book The Flight Investigation and Analysis of Longitudinal Handling Qualities of STOL Aircraft on Landing Approach written by Karl-H Doetsch (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flight investigation was undertaken of the longitudinal handling qualities of the STOL class of aircraft controlled through the modulation of pitch and normal thrust, and flown on steep, instrument landing approaches at low airspeed. Pilots' assessments of the characteristics resulting from independent variations in both short and long term longitudinal dynamics were obtained. It was found that the pitch control characteristics dominated the handling qualities. The more easily and precisely pitch could be controlled, the more adverse the control characteristics of the other degrees of freedom the pilot would accept. When precise long-term control of airspeed through pitch modulation was not difficult, the pilots were prepared to tolerate operation well along the backside of the power-required curve.

Book Flight Test and Handling Qualities Analysis of a Longitudinal Flight Control System Using Multiobjective Techniques

Download or read book Flight Test and Handling Qualities Analysis of a Longitudinal Flight Control System Using Multiobjective Techniques written by John R. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the application of optimal, multiobjective control theory control theory to flight control design for the approach and landing phase of flight. Five flight control systems were designed using classical, H2, H infinity, and Mixed H2/H infinity methods. The MATLAB(Trade Mark) MUTOOLS(Trade Mark) and AFIT MXTOOLS toolboxes were used to produce the optimal, multiobjective designs. These designs were implemented for flight test on the Calspan VSS I Learjet, simulating the unstable longitudinal dynamics of an F-16 type aircraft. A limited handling qualities investigation was performed. Model following was used in the design phase to meet handling qualities specifications. The designs were successfully implemented and verified on the Calspan Learjet prior to flight test. An unmodeled aircraft mode was discovered just prior to flight test that made three of the designs slightly unstable. However, all of the designs achieved Level II or better Cooper-Harper handling qualities ratings for the landing tasks performed illustrating that the optimal multiobjective methods used can give acceptable or better handling qualities.

Book Evaluation of Numerator Lead Effects on Aircraft Handling Qualities

Download or read book Evaluation of Numerator Lead Effects on Aircraft Handling Qualities written by David W. Eidsaune and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of a combined analytical/flight test evaluation to investigate the effects of short period zero (T theta 2) on aircraft handling qualities are presented. Two optimal pilot models were used for the analytical portion. 1/T theta 2 was varied from 0.1 to 10 for each 4 different short period configurations. Flight testing was accomplished in the variable stability NT-33A aircraft, over a range of 1/T theta 2 values at one short period configuration. A pitch tracking task was used to generate RMS pitch errors for both the analytical and flight test phase. Cooper-Harper ratings were also collected during the flight test. Analytical results showed similar trends for all short period configurations, with pilot tracking task performance degrading at low 1/T theta 2 values. The bandwidth criterion was of limited use in predicting handling qualities levels based on T theta 2 variations alone. DC gain variations produced minimal differences in pilot performance. Overall evaluation results indicate that T theta 2 placement is an important factor in short period handling qualities and should be included in future revisions to MIL-F-8785C.
