Book The Oboe Works of Richard Dubugnon

Download or read book The Oboe Works of Richard Dubugnon written by Katherine Elizabeth Woolsey and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In his relatively brief musical career, French-Swiss composer Richard Dubugnon has written orchestral, solo, and chamber works for most instruments and voice types. His symphonic compositions have been performed by such prestigious American orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He has written pieces for acclaimed soloists and recording artists, including oboist Nicholas Daniel and violinist Janine Jansen. Despite these recent successes, his exposure has been mostly restricted to the European market. In the last five years, however, Dubugnon has gained momentum as a composer in the United States. Although he has experienced increased popularity with American conductors and musicians, there is relatively little known about him, his musical philosophy, and his compositional process. The majority of Dubugnon's catalog for woodwind instruments has been composed for the oboe. He has written three pieces for oboe thus far- Cinq Masques, Op. 10 (1995) for solo oboe, Canonic Verses, Op. 16 (1996) for oboe, oboe d'amore, and English horn, and Mikroncerto III, Op. 37 (2005) for oboe d'amore, basset clarinet, and piano. Considering his overall compositional output and relatively short career as a composer, his catalog has produced a significant contribution to the solo and chamber repertoire of the oboe family. This treatise examines the life of Richard Dubugnon and his works for oboe, oboe d'amore, and English horn, with the purpose of bringing to light his compositions' significance within the general oboe repertoire. This paper will outline Dubugnon's compositional techniques, use of nonmusical media his composition of musical elements, and treatment of extended techniques in his solo and chamber works. This will be accomplished through extensive musical analysis, and a performance guide will be provided where applicable.

Book Analysis of Charles Koechlin s Vocal Works Op 7 and Op 151

Download or read book Analysis of Charles Koechlin s Vocal Works Op 7 and Op 151 written by Marian Irineo Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to place Charles Koechlin's songs, Quatre poï¿1⁄2mes d'Edmond Haraucourt, Op. 7 and Sept chansons pour Gladys, Op. 151, within the larger context of the French art song tradition by intensively examining the form, texture, harmonic language, and text setting of these songs, as well as Koechlin's approach to the mï¿1⁄2lodie as a genre. Composed respectively near the beginning and the end of his career, this study examines how Charles Koechlin approached his songs in the context of the various revolutionary developments in music during his period. This study begins with a brief discussion of Charles Koechlin's background as a composer followed by the developments in French music during his time. It then explores the genesis of the art song and outlines the development of the mï¿1⁄2lodie. An introductory perspective of the song genre and a survey of the prevailing songs around the time when Koechlin wrote opus 7 and opus 151 are also included. The two song cycles are then analysed in detail. The thesis of this paper is that Koechlin did not move to a new direction but rather continued the prevailing tradition of the mï¿1⁄2lodie at the time of writing the two song cycles. These two song cycles typified two very clear cut stages in the development of French music in general, and French mï¿1⁄2lodies in particular: the late 19th century preimpressionistic style of Faurï¿1⁄2; and the neoclassicism of the period between the two world wars.

Book Charles Koechlin 1867 1950

Download or read book Charles Koechlin 1867 1950 written by Robert Orledge and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1942 Wilfrid Mellers classed Koechlin "among the select number of contemporary composers who really matter," yet it is only in the 1980s that Koechlin has begun to achieve the recognition he deserves as a composer of breadth, vision and powerful originality: a pioneer of polytonality and a master orchestrator who was greatly admired by contemporaries such as Faure, Debussy, Satie and Milhaud. Lavishly illustrated with photographic and musical examples, this book provides the first comprehensive evaluation of Koechlin's life and works. As well as concentrating on major symphonic works like Koechlin's Jungle Book cycle, it also discusses his attraction to the early sound film and the music inspired by such stars as Lilian Harvey, Marlene Dietrich and Charlie Chaplin in the 1930s. Koechlin's career provides a fascinating study of the triumph of integrity and independence over almost overwhelming odds, and is rich and varied output offers a veritable treasure-trove for performers, scholars and enthusiasts alike.

Book George Gershwin

Download or read book George Gershwin written by Howard Pollack and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-01-15 with total page 938 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive biography of George Gershwin (1898-1937) unravels the myths surrounding one of America's most celebrated composers and establishes the enduring value of his music. Gershwin created some of the most beloved music of the twentieth century and, along with Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter, helped make the golden age of Broadway golden. Howard Pollack draws from a wealth of sketches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, books, articles, recordings, films, and other materials—including a large cache of Gershwin scores discovered in a Warner Brothers warehouse in 1982—to create an expansive chronicle of Gershwin’s meteoric rise to fame. He also traces Gershwin’s powerful presence that, even today, extends from Broadway, jazz clubs, and film scores to symphony halls and opera houses. Pollack’s lively narrative describes Gershwin’s family, childhood, and education; his early career as a pianist; his friendships and romantic life; his relation to various musical trends; his writings on music; his working methods; and his tragic death at the age of 38. Unlike Kern, Berlin, and Porter, who mostly worked within the confines of Broadway and Hollywood, Gershwin actively sought to cross the boundaries between high and low, and wrote works that crossed over into a realm where art music, jazz, and Broadway met and merged. The author surveys Gershwin’s entire oeuvre, from his first surviving compositions to the melodies that his brother and principal collaborator, Ira Gershwin, lyricized after his death. Pollack concludes with an exploration of the performances and critical reception of Gershwin's music over the years, from his time to ours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W HAT I H A V E attempted in this book is a survey of song; the kind of song which one finds variously described as 'concert', 'art', or sometimes even 'classical song'. 'Concert song' seems the most useful, certainly the least inexact or misleading, of some descriptions, especially since 'art song' sounds primly off putting, and 'classical song' really ought to be used only to refer to songs written during the classical period, i. e. the 18th century. Concert song clearly means the kind of songs one hears sung at concerts or recitals. Addressing myself to the general music-lover who, though he possesses no special knowledge of the song literature, is never theless interested enough in songs and their singers to attend recitals of Lieder or of songs in various languages, I have naturally confined myself to that period of time in which the vast majority of these songs was composed, though not necessarily only to those composers whose songs have survived to be remembered in recital programmes today. I suppose this to be roughly the three centuries covered by the years 1650-1950, though most of the songs we, as audiences, know and love were composed in the middle of this period, in other words in the 19th century.
