Book Investigations Into Shock Induced Enhancement of Mixing and Combustion in Supersonic Burners

Download or read book Investigations Into Shock Induced Enhancement of Mixing and Combustion in Supersonic Burners written by Frank E. Marble and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modifications to three major facilities at Caltech, carried out in preparation for an extensive investigation of shock enhanced mixing and combustion in supersonic combustion ramjets, has progressed according to schedule. Work is complete on the GALCIT 17-inch shock tube and on the Unsteady Combustion Facility, and they are operating as planned. Extensive improvement of the optical diagnostics and data acquisition equipment for both of these is nearly complete. Design of the new heated-hydrogen leg for the Hydrogen/Fluorine facility has been simplified considerably from the original concept and is progressing satisfactorily. Extensive computational studies of the interaction between weak shock waves and isolated regions of hydrogen embedded in air has revealed a behavior which suggests that considerable technological advantage may accrue by the use of multiple weak shocks to enhance mixing. Keywords: Supersonic combustion; Vortex burning mixing; Shear layers vorticity generation; Shock enhanced mixing.

Book Computational Study and Error Analysis of an Integrated Sampling probe and Gas analyzer for Mixing Measurements in Supersonic Flows

Download or read book Computational Study and Error Analysis of an Integrated Sampling probe and Gas analyzer for Mixing Measurements in Supersonic Flows written by Wenbo Zhu and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentration probes are employed in supersonic flow mixing experiments for binary gas mixture composition measurements. These measurements are fundamental for the advancement of the scramjet technology. While non-intrusive laser-based methods (such as planar laser-induced fluorescence and filtered Rayleigh scattering) have been developed greatly over the past few decades, intrusive methods (such as concentration probes) still play an essential role in the measurement of mixture composition due to the fact that, with correct application, they do not require further assumptions on the aerothermodynamic states of the investigated mixture, which are often difficult to corroborate. Conversely, such assumptions are essential to the measurement of the mixture composition with current non-intrusive methods. Because the typical design of these probes is essentially based on an inviscid, adiabatic, quasi-one-dimensional analysis, the scope of this work is to better understand and quantify the severe impact of viscous effects on the probe's internal gas dynamics and the associated uncertainties in the measured quantities via a computational fluid dynamics analysis. Specifically, the focus is on the augmented errors due to the aforementioned viscous effects when coupled with various cases of probe-flow misalignment, which is a typical scenario encountered in mixing measurements of binary gas compositions (air and helium mixture in the present work) in vortex-dominated flows. Results, new in literature, show phenomena such as shock-induced boundary layer separation and the formation of an oblique shock train. These flow features are found to noticeably affect the accuracy of the composition measurement. The errors associated with the inviscid, adiabatic, quasi-one-dimensional analysis of the probes are quantified in this study. The computational model developed in this work is also used to design a probe that can minimize such errors in mixture composition measurements.

Book Turbulent Reacting Flows and Supersonic Combustion

Download or read book Turbulent Reacting Flows and Supersonic Combustion written by C. T. Bowman and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and computational investigation of supersonic combustion flows is in progress. The principal objective of the research is to gain a more fundamental understanding of mixing and chemical reaction in supersonic flows. The research effort comprises three inter-related elements: 1) an experimental study of mixing and combustion in a supersonic plane mixing layer; 2) development of laser-induced fluorescence techniques for time-resolved two-dimensional imaging of species concentration, temperature, velocity and pressure; and, 3) numerical simulations of compressible reacting flows. The design of the supersonic plane mixing layer was completed and the high-pressure gas storage system was installed. The pulsed lasers and camera systems, to be used for two-dimension flow field imaging, were installed and initial performance evaluations are in progress. This work has focussed on development of appropriate numerical methods for performing full-turbulence simulations of high-speed compressible flows and on the application of these methods to temporally and spatially developing compressible mixing layers. The effort to date has identified several promising numerical methods for compressible flow problems. In addition, a code was developed for compressible mixing layers, and initial simulation using this code shows interesting features, such as imbedded shock waves, in high-speed mixing layers. Keywords: Turbulent reacting flow, Laser diagnostics, Computational fluid dynamics.
