Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welding in Energy-Related Projects contains the proceedings of the Welding Institute of Canada’s Second International Conference held in Toronto, 20-21 September 1983, on the theme ""Welding in Energy-Related Projects."" The contributions to the conference offer a unique overview of many areas of technology from research and development studies to construction and operation, and as such provide a comprehensive reference source. This volume contains 44 papers organized into eight sections. Section I contains studies on materials and weldability of steels for energy structures. Section II covers welding techniques such as flux-cored arc welding, root pass welding, and automatic welding. Section III on welding control systems includes studies on such as integrated robotic welding and microprocessor technology in automatic integrated welding systems. Sections IV and V presents studies on welding of high-alloy systems and welding procedure optimization, respectively. Section VI covers quality assurance and inspection of piping systems. Section VII takes up the properties of welds. Section VIII presents stress and strain analyses of welds.

Book Residual Stresses in Design Fabrication Assessment and Repair

Download or read book Residual Stresses in Design Fabrication Assessment and Repair written by Robert W. Warke and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses introduced during fabrication (particularly by welding processes) are often a significant concern in the structural integrity of pressure vessels and piping; yet they are rarely treated explicitly in design, and unrealistically conservative assumptions regarding their distribution

Book Analysis of Welding induced Residual Stresses with the ADINA System

Download or read book Analysis of Welding induced Residual Stresses with the ADINA System written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welding-induced residual stresses analysis procedure (WIRSAP), based on ADINA system of nonlinear finite element software, is described and results of several WIRSAP analyses are discussed. Several 2D axisymmetric WIRSAP analyses were performed for pipe girth welds and for several multi-pass girth-like welds attaching small nozzles to large, thick-walled pressure vessels. The analytical methodology follows closely Rybicki et al, enhanced by several specialized modeling techniques available in ADINA. The element birth option is used to simulate the addition of weld metal, and the mixed pressure/ displacement element formulation is used, in conjunction with temperature-dependent bi-linear plasticity material model. Some of the welds analyzed involve backing rings, which were subsequently 'machined off' via use of the element death option. The auto-time-stepping algorithm and matrix update iteration scheme are used in structural solutions. WIRSAP involves, a pass-by-pass analysis of uncoupled thermal and structural problems, but some analyses have been performed with an ''enveloping'' technique for grouping several weld passes together. The analyses are all 2D, but most are large problems and pose challenge to software and hardware. Operations are performed on a network of Silicon Graphics workstations, and ADINA and ADINA-T are executed on a 64 MW, eight-processor CRAY YIMP. Nominally 50 solution steps are utilized for each weld pass and weld joints involving as many as 31 individual weld passes analyzed on a pass-by-pass basis. Results from several WIRSAP analyses are discussed, and potential use of WIRSAP in a hypothetic attachment weld design optimization study is illustrated.

Book Comprehensive Structural Integrity

Download or read book Comprehensive Structural Integrity written by Ian Milne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 4647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this major reference work is to provide a first point of entry to the literature for the researchers in any field relating to structural integrity in the form of a definitive research/reference tool which links the various sub-disciplines that comprise the whole of structural integrity. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between mechanics and materials and structural integrity applications. Because of the interdisciplinary and applied nature of the work, it will be of interest to mechanical engineers and materials scientists from both academic and industrial backgrounds including bioengineering, interface engineering and nanotechnology. The scope of this work encompasses, but is not restricted to: fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep, materials, dynamics, environmental degradation, numerical methods, failure mechanisms and damage mechanics, interfacial fracture and nano-technology, structural analysis, surface behaviour and heart valves. The structures under consideration include: pressure vessels and piping, off-shore structures, gas installations and pipelines, chemical plants, aircraft, railways, bridges, plates and shells, electronic circuits, interfaces, nanotechnology, artificial organs, biomaterial prostheses, cast structures, mining... and more. Case studies will form an integral part of the work.

Book Residual Stresses in Composite Materials

Download or read book Residual Stresses in Composite Materials written by Mahmood M. Shokrieh and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The residual stress is a common phenomenon in composite materials. They can either add to or significantly reduce material strength. Because of the increasing demand for high-strength, lightweight materials such as composites and their wide range of applications; it is critical that the residual stresses of composite materials are understood and measured correctly. The first edition of this book consists of thirteen chapters divided into two parts. The first part reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses. There are also additional chapters on using mathematical (analytical and numerical) methods for the calculation of residual stresses in composite materials. These include the simulated hole drilling method, the slitting/crack compliance method, measuring residual stresses in homogeneous and composite glass materials using photoelastic techniques, and modeling residual stresses in composite materials. The second part of the book discusses measuring residual stresses in different types of composites including polymer and metal matrix composites. The addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for the reduction of residual stresses is also discussed. In the Second Edition of this book, each of the original chapters of the first edition has been fully updated, taking into account the latest research and new developments. There are also five new chapters on the theoretical and experimental studies of residual stresses in the composite integrated circuits; residual stresses in additive manufacturing of polymers and polymer matrix composites; residual stresses in metal matrix composites fabricated by additive manufacturing; the eigenstrain based method for the incremental hole-drilling technique; and the estimation of residual stresses in polymer matrix composites using the digital image correlation technique. Residual Stresses in Composite Materials, Second Edition, provides a unique and comprehensive overview of this important topic and is an invaluable reference text for both academics and professionals working in the mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace, automotive, marine, and sporting industries. Presents the latest developments on theoretical and experimental studies of residual stresses in composites Reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses Discusses residual stresses in the polymer matrix, metal matrix, and ceramic matrix composites Considers the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses in polymeric composites Introduces the latest advancements of research on the residual stresses in additive-manufactured polymer and metal matrix composites
