Book The Impact of Intergenerational Effects and Geography on Youth Employment Outcomes

Download or read book The Impact of Intergenerational Effects and Geography on Youth Employment Outcomes written by Ross Kelly and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High youth unemployment in Australia is one of the major labour market issues confronting policy makers. Average youth unemployment rates in the Perth metropolitan region were over 15 per cent at the time of the 1996 Census, substantially higher than those recorded two decades ago. However, the burden of unemployment has not been borne equally by neighbourhoods within the metropolitan region. This paper shows that there are significant intergenerational rigidities in youth employment outcomes in the Perth region. It appears that the demographic characteristics of neighbourhoods are a significant causal factor in the employment outcomes of youths. The implication for policy is that the targeting of individuals at risk of unemployment may not be appropriate unless the relationship between youth unemployment, region and demography is taken into account.

Book Impediments to the Employment of Young People

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides a review of research, especially Australian research, concerned with youth employment and the impediments to the expansion of youth employment. Following the introduction, the report is divided into nine main sections. First, a demand and supply framework, which is used to structure this review, is introduced. The next four sections then examine a variety of demand-side influences often hypothesized to provide obstacles to youth employment: cyclical variations in aggregate demand, structural change, inadequate education and training, and changing employer preferences. An examination of two supply-side influences--the level and structure of unemployment benefits and the preferences and aspirations of young workers--follows. The study then considers the role that labor costs play in determining employment outcomes. Finally, the implications for youth of the growth in part-time and casual working arrangements are examined. The document contains 25 endnotes and 44 references. (YLB)

Book The Youth Labour Market in Australia

Download or read book The Youth Labour Market in Australia written by Philip E. T. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The youth labour market in Australia is characterised by low participation rates and predominance of part time employment, as well as high unemployment and underemployment. There has been a significant rise in education participation rates in Australia in recent year, directly linked to the demand for full time teenage employees. Despite teenage unemployment in Australia being twice that of the general population, only a very small proportion of the teenage population in Australia are not in some form of employment or education. This reflects the unique nature of the teenage market. This study investigates both the demand and supply characteristics of the market, and finds that many of the cliches associated with it do not stand up to close examination.

Book Global Youth Unemployment

Download or read book Global Youth Unemployment written by Ross Fergusson and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book introduces a fresh perspective on youth unemployment by analysing it as a global phenomenon. Ross Fergusson and Nicola Yeates argue that only by incorporating analysis of the dynamics of the global economy and global governance can we make convincing, comprehensive sense of these developments. The authors present substantial new evidence spanning a century pointing to the strong relationships between youth unemployment, globalisation, economic crises and consequent harms to young people’s social and economic welfare worldwide. The book notably encompasses data and analysis spanning the Global South as well as the Global North.
