Book excerpt: In recent years institutions of higher education have received increased pressure to enhance private charitable gift support in divisions of university advancement (Drezner, 2013). Divisions of university advancement frequently depend on tracking past gifts to predict future gifts and not consistently consider whether alumni engagement is a predictor of future giving (Kelly, 1998). Alumni engagement is defined as, "Activities that are valued by alumni, build enduring and mutually beneficial relationships, inspire loyalty and financial support, strengthen the institution's reputation and involve alumni in meaningful activities to advance the institution's mission" (CASE, 2018, p. 5). The purpose of this study was to evaluate how engagement as a student and as an alumnus relates to alumni charitable giving. The study considered engagement factors that specifically related to the undergraduate student experience as well as factors related to alumni. This study considered which factors may be predictive of charitable giving as an alumnus. This study also considered whether the stage of relationship between the alumnus and the university, when a charitable gift was made, predicted lifetime charitable giving amount. The study examined engagement as it pertains to giving using forward logistic regression analysis and forward multiple regression to examine variables and their relationships. The population of this study was alumni of a small private religiously-affiliated university in the Midwest and utilized a secondary data set. Results of the forward logistic regression produced a three-factor model, indicating that receiving a university scholarship more than doubled the odds of an alumnus making a gift to their alma mater. The result of the forward multiple regression did not indicate that participation in a team sport or membership in a registered student organization increased the odds of charitable giving to one's alma mater. Book excerpt: In 2011, over 30 billion dollars were given to colleges and universities across the United States; donors included individuals, corporations, foundations, and religious organizations. Of the 30 billion dollars, 43% of this financial support came directly from individual and alumni donors (Council for Aid to Education, 2011). Leslie and Ramey (1988) stated that "voluntary support is becoming the only source of real discretionary money [that a college or university has]" (p. 115). The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of responses from senior class students on the 2006 National Survey of Student Engagement to be used as predictors of alumni donor participation in liberal arts colleges. The sample of this study was 10 Carnegie Baccalaureate Colleges from the southeastern United States. The institutions that participated provided alumni donor participation data for members of the undergraduate class of 2006 for a five-year post-graduation period. Logistical regression models were developed to represent the multivariate impacts of NSSE benchmark scores and student demographics independent variables on the bivariate alumni donor participation rate dependent variable. The results indicated that two NSSE benchmarks, measured by the 2006 NSSE, (Level of Academic Challenge and Student-Faculty Interaction) and three demographic variables (parental level of education, Greek Life membership, and receipt of an institutional scholarship) had a positive relationship with increased alumni donor participation.

Book excerpt: Community colleges have begun to rely more heavily on private funding sources like alumni donations to support their overall fiscal health. This correlational study tested the theory of planned behavior as it relates to level of engagement through social media for community college alumni and alumni giving behavior for Virginia’s community colleges. More specifically, it attempted to determine whether a relationship exists between alumni use of their alma mater’s Facebook page and engagement behaviors. Survey data were gathered from participating colleges and from a randomly drawn sample of alumni of Virginia’s 23 community colleges (N=4,100) using the Virginia Community College Alumni Giving Survey, an instrument that incorporates the Ranganathan and Henley (2008) measure of giving intention. Multiple regression analysis was used to provide insight into the strength of relationships among the variables. While the original null hypothesis could not be rejected at the .05 alpha level, additional analyses revealed statistically significantly relationships among the variables, under different conditions, led to the conclusion that consistency of effort in building and maintaining relationships with alumni is vitally important to alumni fundraising programs. Recommendations for further research include repeating the current study under more consistent conditions with broader participation by community colleges, studying alternative forms of engagement – with or without the mitigating factor of social media – in pre-test/post-test format, and utilizing qualitative research methods to provide greater insight into donor motivations in general and alumni giving motivations specifically.

Whilst University Fundraising in Britain is a work of social history that primarily focuses on university fundraising, many parts of the book apply wherever there is a need to attract funds for all kinds of charitable and cultural activities. Book excerpt: This cross-sectional exploratory study examines the role of student organization involvement in alumni giving at a large Midwestern university and offers insight into development strategies for the university. The extant literature shows a link between student involvement and alumni giving but the specific mechanism by which this occurs is unclear. Grounded in resource dependency theory and organizational identification theory, the author identified greek letter organizations and religious student organizations ("external student organizations") as unique in that they are affiliated with the university but funded, managed and staffed by non-university employees, and they solicit donations from students and alumni that fund their operations, not the university’s. Using data from a university alumni survey program called the “Mascot Room” for the purposes of this dissertation, the author surveyed respondents who were participants in these two types of student organizations and compared their giving records to their peers. The findings include that while participation in greek letter organizations increases the likelihood of those students being alumni donors, those students are also likely to direct some of their charitable giving away from the university. Those students who did donate to their greek letter organization were more likely to be university donors. The author uses the results to call for focusing targeted development efforts on this subset of students and for collaboration between development and student affairs officers to engage with them as undergraduates.
