Book Thinking Reading What every secondary teacher needs to know about reading

Download or read book Thinking Reading What every secondary teacher needs to know about reading written by Dianne Murphy and published by John Catt. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the efforts of teachers and educators, every year secondary schools across the English-speaking world turn out millions of functionally illiterate leavers. The costs in human misery and in wasted productivity are catastrophic. What can schools do to prevent this situation? In this highly accessible book James and Dianne Murphy combine more than 50 years of experience to provide teachers with a thorough, easy to use introduction to the extensive research on reading and its effects on student achievement. Drawing on the work of experts from around the world, the authors explore how we learn to read, how the many myths and misconceptions around reading developed, and why they continue to persist.Building on these foundations chapters go on to examine how the general secondary school classroom can support all levels of reading more effectively, regardless of subject; how school leaders can ensure that their systems, practices and school culture deliver the very best literacy provision for all students; and what it takes to ensure that a racing intervention aimed at adolescent struggling readers is truly effective. The overall message of this books is one of great optimism: the authors demonstrate that the right of every child to learn to read is entirely achievable if schools employ the best research-driven practice.

Book A Case for Teaching Literature in the Secondary School

Download or read book A Case for Teaching Literature in the Secondary School written by Janet Alsup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a close look at the forces that affect English education in schools—at the ways literature, cognitive science, the privileging of the STEM disciplines, and current educational policies are connected—this timely book counters with a strong argument for the importance of continuing to teach literature in middle and secondary classrooms. The case is made through critical examination of the ongoing "culture wars" between the humanities and the sciences, recent research in cognitive literary studies demonstrating the power of narrative reading, and an analysis of educational trends that have marginalized literature teaching in the U.S., including standards-based and scripted curricula. The book is distinctive in presenting both a synthesis of arguments for literary study in the middle and high school and sample lesson plans from practicing teachers exemplifying how literature can positively influence adolescents’ intellectual, emotional, and social selves.

Book Teaching Reading in Secondary Schools

Download or read book Teaching Reading in Secondary Schools written by Geoff Dean and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being able to read well is one of the most important literacy requirements in our society. It is fundamental to almost all secondary school subjects and the English programme in particular. The new Key Stage 3 focus on teaching reading compels us to find exciting ways to engage young people with texts that they will continue with and develop themselves. This book outlines several approaches to reading which challenge former classroom practices. It is through these approaches that all students - from reluctant boys to the most able of either gender - can continue to grow as readers and develop their readiness to seek meaning in texts. This second edition adds to the original ideas in Geoff Dean's first book and includes new methods of teaching reading, including "guided reading" and using increased grammatical student knowledge.

Book Reading in Secondary Content Areas

Download or read book Reading in Secondary Content Areas written by Zhihui Fang and published by University of Michigan Press ELT. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to teach reading in the context of the middle and high school classroom? Don’t students already know how to read by the time they get to secondary school? And how can a busy teacher take time away from the packed curriculum of science, history, mathematics, or language arts to teach reading? This book presents a linguistic approach to teaching reading in different subjects; an approach that focuses on language itself. Central to this approach is a view that knowledge is constructed in and through language and that language changes with changes in knowledge. As students move from elementary to secondary schools, they encounter specialized knowledge and engage in new contexts of learning in all subjects. This means that the language of secondary school learning is quite different from the language of the elementary years. While in the elementary years the subject matter of reading materials is often close to students’ everyday life experiences, the curriculum of secondary school deals with knowledge that is removed from students’ personal lives and everyday contexts. The language that constructs this more specialized knowledge thus tends to be more abstract, technical, information-laden, and hierarchically organized than the more familiar and “friendly” language that students typically encounter during the elementary years. Students need to develop specialized literacies (literacy relevant to each content area) as well as a critical literacy they can use across subject areas to engage with, reflect on, and assess specialized and advanced knowledge. This functional language analysis approach is shown using actual secondary social studies, science, and math textbooks and using a literary text.
