Even in official Washington, a staffer's report on social research may go unnoticed while a report in the Washington Post receives immediate attention. This study takes a systematic and revealing look at social science reporting. How do journalists hear about social science, and why do they select certain stories to cover and not others? How do journalistic standards for selection compare with social scientists' own judgments of merit? How do reporters attempt to ensure accuracy, and how freely do they introduce their own interpretations of social science findings? How satisfied are social scientists with the selection and accuracy of social science news? In Part I, Carol H. Weiss addresses these questions on the basis of personal interviews with social scientists and the journalists who wrote about their work. Part II, by Eleanor Singer, is based on an analysis of media content itself, and compares social science reporting over time (between 1970 and 1982) and across media (newspapers, newsmagazines, television). These two complementary perspectives combine to produce a thorough, realistic assessment of the way social science moves out of the academy and into the world of news.

One full year's (i.e., 2014) worth of science news from four newspapers (i.e., two prestige newspapers, The New York Times and The Washington Post, and two high-circulation newspapers, The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Minneapolis Star Tribune) was gathered and content analyzed in an attempt to determine the distribution of positive, negative, and neutral/ambiguous science news and to compare these distributions in different types of newspapers. Results of a content analysis of 425 (N=425) science news articles indicated that there were no statistically significant differences between the two newspaper groups (i.e., prestige and high-circulation newspapers) or between the four individual newspapers in terms of their distributions of positive, negative, and neutral/ambiguous science news articles. This study did result with the general observation that there was a large amount of positive and neutral/ambiguous science news and a small amount of negative science news in all four newspapers. An interesting finding of this study is that there was a much larger amount of science news in prestige newspapers (i.e., in 2014, there were 984 science news articles in the prestige newspapers under investigation) than there was in high-circulation papers (i.e., in 2014, there were 179 science news articles in the high-circulation newspapers under investigation).

Book excerpt: This multimethod study examined change efforts to integration at a mid-sized family-owned newspaper as a new content-management system was implemented. Using the open systems model, the organization was analyzed through the lens of organizational and strategic theory as well as the uses-and-gratifications tradition from the field of mass communication. An ethnography was conducted over a five-month period using in-depth interviews and observation to analyze the organizational structure, routines, and culture. A secondary analysis of a national media-usage survey was conducted to understand the needs of news audiences in the new-media environment. The study found that a commitment to core journalistic values, not resistance to technology, inhibited organizational learning and the ability to change.

On the basis of the analyses, the author discusses the linguistic applications, lexical devices and personal experiences, along with their embodied mechanisms, revealing the linguistic strategies, embodied cognitive linguistic actions and constructive thoughts used in media discourses on product promotion, human resources deployment, and commodity problem resolution. In turn, this sheds light on how linguistic selections and cognitive mechanisms are used in composing media news and on how public cognition on certain social and business issues might be framed. The combination of cognitive semantics and commercial discourse analysis offers comprehensive and rewarding insights into the cross-cultural research of both cognitive actions and linguistic behavior reflected in news reports and highlights the correlation between the use of wording and cognitive construction in discourses, which broadens the scope of discourse analysis, cognitive linguistics, applied linguistics, and sociolinguistics. Further, the use of analytical measures and the effective integration of discourse analysis and cognitive semantics lend the book additional analytical authenticity, providing an empirical foundation for cross-cultural communication studies.
