Book An Examination of Leadership Styles of School Principals and Student Effectiveness in Urban Elementary Schools in the State of Ohio

Download or read book An Examination of Leadership Styles of School Principals and Student Effectiveness in Urban Elementary Schools in the State of Ohio written by Chad Konkle and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Regression was used to examine the relationship between the principal's leadership styles (Independent Variable) and growth in the Performance Index (Dependent Variable). The 19 principals' dominant leadership style was transformational leadership. The regression model failed to be significant; therefore, based on the data, leadership as measured by the MLQ-5X is not a good predictor for growth. The relationship on school leadership and growth was not significantly substantial. Although there was no predictive relationship, the data verify that the 19 schools that have shown growth had transformational leaders. Future research suggests a larger sample size to determine if leadership styles have a relationship to student growth.

Book The Relationship Between Leadership Styles and Elementary School Climate

Download or read book The Relationship Between Leadership Styles and Elementary School Climate written by Shvilla Bryan Gaines and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study utilized the descriptive and quantitative approaches to examine elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district. Research supports the relationship of leadership styles, school climate and student achievement does exist and this study identified and explored how it exists between the school principals' leadership style and school climate. Participants consisted of elementary principals and teachers in an urban school district within the southeastern region of the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of a relationship between elementary school principals' leadership styles and school climate in an urban school district. Survey instruments were the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) Form XII Self and the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire for elementary schools (OCDQ-RE). Demographic information was gathered from the principals and teachers that were subjects of this research (Table 3 and Appendix C). The following research question was posed: Does a relationship exist between the elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district? Descriptive statistics summarized the data characteristics of the independent variable (principal leadership style) and dependent variable (school climate). The data was analyzed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. A Positive linear relationship in climate was found for three different groups. These three groups had a statistically significant correlations coefficient and p-values between the LBDQ-Form XII Self and OCDQ-RE subscales. The school principals must be able to access and evaluate the impact they may have on the climate of the school. This study proposed strategies school principals from the participating school district can use to create a more open school climate.

Book Four African American Male Principals and Their Leadership in Urban Elementary Schools

Download or read book Four African American Male Principals and Their Leadership in Urban Elementary Schools written by Edrick George Moultry and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study was conducted as a qualitative study on four African American male elementary principals. The qualitative research framework was selected to examine and give voice to the life experiences and leadership practices of four African American male administrators of urban elementary schools. The purpose of the study was to expand the limited research base regarding the lived experiences of the principalship from the participants' point of view as they are able to apprise other administrators on the issues of leadership in diverse school settings. The guiding questions were, (1) what personal characteristics attributed to these African American male principals success in elementary urban education; (2) how did the selected African American male principals exercise and interpret their acts of leadership; and (3) what were these African American male principals' perceptions about leadership as related to student outcomes in an urban elementary school. The results of this study yielded the following as it related to the voices of four African American male principals and their leadership in urban elementary schools:(1) many forms or ways of leading were practiced by the principals; (2) their upbringing or journeys to the principalship were different, however they wanted to make a difference in the lives of students; (3) the guidance from people around them played an instrumental part in the principal leadership practices; (4) they believed that hiring quality teachers was important to the success of the schools they led; and (5) they viewed acts of caring as essential to building relationships. Book A Study of Principal Instructional Leadership Behaviors Manifested in Successful and Nonsuccessful Urban Elementary Schools

Download or read book A Study of Principal Instructional Leadership Behaviors Manifested in Successful and Nonsuccessful Urban Elementary Schools written by Margaret Mary Irma Cantu and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to discover the principal instructional leadership behaviors differed in successful and nonsuccessful urban elementary schools. Six schools were selected and paired according to size, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and attendance to discover the salient leadership behavior differences between and among them. A descriptive survey research design was utilized to collect data through the Hallinger-Murphy Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS) which assessed frequency of leadership behaviors. Six (100%) of the principals and 95 (49%) teachers responded. The research questions were tested statistically using Analysis of Variance to decipher leadership differences between the pairs of schools and differences of perceived principal behaviors based on teachers' grade levels and teaching experience. The instructional leadership behaviors manifested by the principals in the selected schools were identified through the PIMRS and tested using the .05 confidence level as the measure of significance. The current literature reported that higher frequency of leadership behaviors, such as those identified in the PIMRS, could lead to academically successful schools. The results of this study went against the grain of the current literature since high scores on the PIMRS did not ensure successful schools and provided confoundment rather than clarification. The principals in the paired schools showed few differences in job behavior patterns, yet one school in each pair was academically successful; the other was not. The research questions stated: 1) There are significant differences between the instructional leadership behaviors demonstrated by the principals of schools with high student achievement when compared with the principals of schools with low student achievement; 2) student demographic characteristics (ethnicity, attendance of students, socioeconomic status) influence student success; and 3) there is a difference in teachers' perceptions of principals' instructional leadership behaviors based on their years of teaching experience and grade level taught. The first and third questions were rejected since the data in this study did not support the questions. The second question was not statistically tested due to a lack of difference in the student populations in the schools. Further study and testing of the Ballinger-Murphy Model is required in order to draw final conclusions on the relationship between principal instructional leadership behaviors and student achievement

This book was released on 2006 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research participants had similar perceptions regarding their leadership styles and behaviors and several themes emerged from the data. Each participant held a set of values and beliefs that included high expectations for all students, participatory leadership, a school culture based on respect and order, data driven decision making and on-going monitoring of student progress. Further research is warranted to study other principals who have demonstrated academic results and seek deeper understandings of sustainability and leadership competencies.
