Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese sentence final particle yone is commonly used as a tag-like question corresponding to "isn't it?" or "right?" in English. Yone is also commonly used to show agreement. Another sentence final particle, ne, is considered as sharing those two functions with yone. However, they are not always interchangeable because there are cases in which yone or ne is the only possible choice; the alternate choice results in an unnatural utterance. This indicates that a simple description of the functions of yone as a tag-like question or showing agreement cannot provide a clear picture of its use. Situated in a discourse and functional framework, the present study analyzes the use of yone as a tag-like question and response with invented and naturally occurring conversation data. The present study argues that when yone is used as a tag-like question, it is associated with explicit or implied cognitive or interactional incongruity while ne encodes that the speaker assumes no difference of understanding or knowledge between conversation participants. Three types of incongruity have been identified in the present study. Type I and Type II are associated with an incongruity of the speaker's understanding or an existing incongruity because the information belongs more to the hearer than the speaker. Type I indicates that the speaker is not completely certain about the information while in Type II the speaker feels completely certain about the information. Yone is used because the information belongs more to the hearer. Type III is associated with a disalignment between the speaker and interactant. Yone is used when disalignment appears and the speaker feels the necessity to seek support from the addressee to justify one's position. Type III also appears in a situation where the addressee does not respond to what the speaker asks or requests. When yone is used in responses, including showing agreement, it indicates the speaker's previously held recognition while ne presents the speaker's here-and-now recognition. Examples are examined in four situations: i) response to immediate situations; ii) response to the speaker's already-known information; iii) response to the answer to a question; and iv) response to assessment

Book excerpt: The Japanese sentence-final particles, "ne," "yo" and "yone" have proved notoriously difficult to explain and are especially challenging for second language users. This book investigates the role of the particles in talk-in-interaction with the aim of providing a comprehensive understanding that accounts for their pragmatic properties and sequential functions and that provides a sound basis for second language pedagogy. This study starts by setting up an original particle function hypothesis based on the figure/ground "gestalt," and then tests its validity empirically with unmarked, marked and native/non-native talk-in-interaction data. The analysis illustrates not only expectable but also unexpected or strategic use of particles, as well as the problems posed for native speakers by non-native speakers whose use of particles is idiosyncratic. The study demonstrates that the proposed hypothesis is capable of accounting for all the uses of particles in the extensive and varied data set examined. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in pragmatics and CA and to teachers of Japanese as a foreign language.

The cross-linguistic approach is not the only method of comparison in psycholinguistics. Other prominent comparative aspects include comprehension vs. production, native speakers vs. second language learners, typical vs. aphasic language development. Many of these approaches are underrepresented in Japanese psycholinguistics. The studies reported in the volumes attempt to bridge these gaps. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive work on word and sentence prosody in Koshikijima Japanese, a dialect of Japanese not fully documented in the literature. It is an endangered dialect spoken by about 2,000 speakers on a small southern island in Japan. Being separated from mainland dialects by the sea, this dialect exhibits unique prosodic features not shared by other Japanese dialects. It also exhibits considerable regional variations among the ten or more small villages that were isolated from each other until recently. Based on the author’s fieldwork, the book analyzes word accent and intonation, the two linguistic areas in which this endangered dialect exhibits unique features and remarkable regional variations within itself. They include the emergence and development of a secondary H tone, postlexical deletion of the primary H tone, and the L boundary tone in question and vocative intonation. These phenomena bear crucially on general issues in prosody, including postlexical tonal neutralizations, competitions between lexical and postlexical tones, and the number of tones that a syllable can maximally bear. The book thus demonstrates the relevance of studying an endangered language/dialect in general linguistic contexts.

An orienting chapter on questions and an appendix provide an introduction to conversation analysis. The book makes a contribution to linguistic anthropology, conversation analysis and cross-cultural pragmatics. The conclusion discusses the implications of the analysis for current understanding of practice, knowledge and social organization in anthropology and neighboring disciplines.
