Book An Analysis of the International Diamond Market

Download or read book An Analysis of the International Diamond Market written by Donna J. Bergenstock and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores one particular threat faced by the diamond industry and De Beers during the early 1990s: the release or leakage of rough (uncut and unpolished) diamonds on the open market by the Russian Federation in violation of their sales agreement with De Beers. Of particular interest is the discussion of how a devastating currency crisis and government budget deficit drove the Russians to leak diamonds, along with the disclosure of the secretive, duplicitous manner in which rough stones were leaked. A secondary issue addressed concerns the promotional efforts undertaken by De Beers and their marketing and distribution subsidiary, the Central Selling Organization (CSO), recently renamed the Diamond Trading Company (DTC), to increase worldwide demand by influencing consumer perceptions and buying behavior.

Download or read book Stateless Commerce written by Barak Richman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Stateless Commerce, Barak Richman uses the colorful case study of the diamond industry to explore how ethnic trading networks operate and why they persist in the twenty-first century. How, for example, does the 47th Street diamond district in midtown Manhattan—surrounded by skyscrapers and sophisticated financial institutions—continue to thrive as an ethnic marketplace that operates like a traditional bazaar? Conventional models of economic and technological progress suggest that such primitive commercial networks would be displaced by new trading paradigms, yet in the heart of New York City the old world persists. Richman’s explanation is deceptively simple. Far from being an anachronism, 47th Street’s ethnic enclave is an adaptive response to the unique pressures of the diamond industry. Ethnic trading networks survive because they better fulfill many functions usually performed by state institutions. While the modern world rests heavily on lawyers, courts, and state coercion, ethnic merchants regularly sell goods and services by relying solely on familiarity, trust, and community enforcement—what economists call “relational exchange.” These commercial networks insulate themselves from the outside world because the outside world cannot provide those assurances. Extending the framework of transactional cost and organizational economics, Stateless Commerce draws on rare insider interviews to explain why personal exchange succeeds, even as most global trade succumbs to the forces of modernization, and what it reveals about the limitations of the modern state in governing the economy.

Book Diamonds Pricing and Ethical Issues Surrounding Diamonds

Download or read book Diamonds Pricing and Ethical Issues Surrounding Diamonds written by Caroline Mutuku and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Economic and Social History, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: Diamonds are believed to be among the most precious commodities for trade. In the past three centuries, diamond has been considered to be one of the rarest mineral elements in the earth’s crust. However, the immense demand for diamond by the global population appears to be the most probable reason as to why diamonds have always been considered as a scarce trade commodity. Interestingly, geological findings indicate that diamonds top the list of the most abundant gem-quality colored stones. It is argued that diamond pricing is the most outstanding feature which creates unusual demand; thus, making diamonds rare. The second reason why diamonds have been considered to be scarce is the nature of the market structure. Over the years, diamond market has been characterized with an unprecedented monopoly in which a single player existed in the market. As a result, diamond pricing and its supply experienced unique market trends, and this is the principal reason as to why diamond supply chain has been manipulated to create market demand against business ethics. The De Beers Company has been exercising monopoly since its establishment in 1880s when Cecil Rhodes started diamond trading. Despite the legal barriers including the U.S anti-trust laws, this company has always exercised monopoly in diamond trading. However, monopoly in the diamond market seems to end soon because its supply will increase significantly after Russia joins the market. Recently, a huge diamond field was discovered in Siberia which can supply the world market with trillion of carats in the next thirty centuries. As a result, the structure of the diamond market is believed to change drastically in the future. Therefore, this research paper will provide an overview of diamond trading, especially with regard to the principal elements of diamond pricing.

Download or read book The Mazzel Ritual written by Dina Siegel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The academic study of diamonds is as multi-faceted as the precious stones themselves. Mineralogists and geographers have written about them, as have historians and economists and students of art and fashion. They each shine their light on a different aspect of this source of luminous radiance. But who would venture to describe the entire complicated worldwide system starting in the diamond mines and ending with the consumers of Western metropolises? In The Mazzel Ritual: Culture, Customs and Crime in the Diamond Trade, Russian-Israeli cultural anthropologist and criminologist Dina Siegel follows the route of a diamond from the mines of Africa to the shops of Europe and the United States, as it passes through countless hands and places and is smuggled, stolen, cut, polished, sold, exchanged and, finally, worn as jewelry. In the course of this long and exciting journey, a wide range of people face all sorts of risks and criminality, as well as various moral and ethical judgments. Siegel describes the range of ethnic groups that are active in the diamond trade and the culture and customs that are specific to this business. She analyses the dangers and threats to the industry and aims to uncover the strategies and tactics to deal with them. Finally, this story of risk, trust and crime examines the vulnerability of diamond production and distribution to illicit and criminal activities. This book is about the diamond business itself as well as about those involved in it. It tells the story of people who simply cannot stay away from this expensive and alluring commodity.

Book Diamonds and War

Download or read book Diamonds and War written by David De Vries and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on previously unexamined historical documents found in archives in Belgium, England, Israel, the Netherlands, and the United States, this book is the first in English to tell the story of the formation of one of the world's main strongholds of diamond production and trade in Palestine during the 1930s and 1940s. The history of the diamond-cutting industry, characterized by a long-standing Jewish presence, is discussed as a social history embedded in the international political economy of its times; the genesis of the industry in Palestine is placed on a broad continuum within the geographic and economic dislocations of Dutch, Belgian, and German diamond-cutting centers. In providing a micro-historical and interdisciplinary perspective, the story of the diamond industry in Mandate Palestine proposes a more nuanced picture of the uncritical approach to the strict boundaries of ethnic-based occupational communities.

The output growth is expected to remain broadly unchanged in 2013 as strong nonmining sector growth would offset the subdued mining output. Banks’ high exposure to households and the acceleration in the growth of unsecured lending are, however, potential vulnerabilities. The authorities are advised to continue to bolster their surveillance capacity to monitor financial sector developments and consider implementing macroprudential measures to temper the rate of growth of household borrowing.

Book The Valuation and Investment Merits of Diamonds

Download or read book The Valuation and Investment Merits of Diamonds written by Sarkis Khoury and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-03-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book which deals with the economics of diamonds, specifically with the determinants of diamond prices. The period of analysis, 1978-1983, was chosen in order to shed light on the dramatic drop in diamond prices. The dominant variables causing this drop were the varying price of gold and fluctuating interest rates. Khoury helps the investor in making long-range decisions about investing in diamonds and deciding on the form the investment should take. He warns of the importance to understand the sensitivities of the market and the factors which must be taken into consideration before commitments to an investment in diamonds are made. The book includes: a quick review of the characteristics of diamonds, the financial performance of DeBeers in a declining market, the economic structure of the diamond industry, the method for exercising economic control over the diamond market, the economic variables influencing diamond prices, and the modeling of diamond prices and the testing of the model using advanced statistical methods.

Book From Blood Diamonds to the Kimberley Process

Download or read book From Blood Diamonds to the Kimberley Process written by Dr Franziska Bieri and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1990s, several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused world attention on the issue of conflict diamonds which funded wars, massive death, and refugee crises across Central and West Africa. Several governments, NGOs, and key industry players engaged in negotiations under the so-called Kimberley Process (KP). A voluntary global agreement came into effect leading to a substantial decline in illicit diamond trade. Despite its importance in international affairs, the KP remains understudied in academia. Franziska Bieri's book provides the first comprehensive account of the KP and is the first to reveal how NGOs have become critical actors in their own right, possessing the ability to directly influence policies and to participate in the decision making and the implementation of global agreements. In developing this argument, Bieri explains: why the NGO campaign to raise awareness was successful; why a rapid and comprehensive resolution on such a complex global problem was possible; how the tripartite negotiations between states, NGOs, and industry developed during the implementation of the agreement, which is an on-going process. Based on extensive personal interviews with prominent campaigners, leading bureaucrats, and industry officials, hundreds of KP publications, official UN documents, industry news, and NGO reports, this timely book allows for a much needed engagement in contemporary debates about the campaign against conflict diamonds, the Kimberley Process, and the themes defining today's global governance arena.
