Book Development of Airfreight Hubs in the Greater Pearl River Delta

Download or read book Development of Airfreight Hubs in the Greater Pearl River Delta written by Jana Schebera and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2006-06-26 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it goes a famous saying by Confucius. My wish in writing this paper is to convince readers of the peculiar beauty and importance of the highly dynamic aviation landscape of the southern Chinese Pearl River Delta. Airfreight is an essential and highly sophisticated part of an economy s logistics infrastructure. A functioning infrastructure is vital for the development of an economy, in particular for its international trade. As trade is a key component in China s economic success formula, demand for an efficient infrastructure is high. Air transportation has become one of the most effective tools to explore and serve world markets. In today s highly competitive business world, just-in-time delivery and good customer service are absolutely crucial. The overall trend towards fast reliable delivery and the transformation of China s economy along with the value chain of production, have boosted demand for air transportation. Due to these developments, the air cargo market, which is still at low levels particularly in domestic transportation, is one of the fastest growing markets in China. The regional focus of this study is on the economic powerhouse of China, the Pearl River Delta (PRD) located in the southern province of Guangdong. Everyone who knows the highly industrialised landscape of the PRD would probably agree, that the region s nickname factory of the world is more than appropriate. The PRD has the highest per capita output in China and generates about one third of national exports. The Greater Pearl River Delta (GPRD) consists of the PRD and the Special Administrative Zones Hong Kong and Macao. In many respects, it is one of the most interesting economic entities of the world. Economy and infrastructure are integrated on a very high level. The GPRD features many extremes: its strong economic power, its rapid growth that has been the highest in China for many years, its population density and last but not least, its aviation landscape. Within radial distance of about 100 km, five international airports are at service, creating the highest airport density in the world. Three of these airports are among China s top five airports. The clear leader among them is Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), which has established itself as a major hub in Asia and has been the airport with the highest international air cargo throughput of the world for many years. Its dominant [...]

Book Air Cargo in Mainland China and Hong Kong

Download or read book Air Cargo in Mainland China and Hong Kong written by Anming Zhang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air traffic and the aviation industry have grown rapidly on the Chinese mainland in the two and a half decades since China's open door policy. Accession to the WTO will further stimulate trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), intensifying the demand for air cargo services. It will also open up the Chinese economy to foreign participation in the transportation and logistics sectors, making these sectors more competitive and efficient. This book provides a systematic and comprehensive study of China's air cargo industry as well as its policy evolution. It covers the sources and destinations of air cargo in mainland China and Hong Kong: whence it comes and where it goes to. The major hubs of the transportation network - Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou - are discussed one by one. The virtual aspects of the network at these hubs in terms of IT applications, preparedness, and needs are examined and compared. Though the subject matter of this book is air cargo, there is considerable coverage of the aviation industry and policy on the mainland and Hong Kong. Changes have been happening so fast there are few books and publications that cover them systematically and comprehensively. Readership includes business executives in airfreight companies, airports and airlines, logistics specialists, aviation university lecturers and students.

Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled "A Study of Freight Transport: Air Cargo in Hong Kong" submitted by SO Man Cheong For the degree of Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning at the University of Hong Kong in August 2007 Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has excellent geographic, so air cargo industry become one of the important industries in Hong Kong's overall economy. In recently year, there is a remarkable growth of Hong Kong's air cargo industry's market. It has averaged 11.2% per annum growth since 1992 and exceeded 3.6 million tones in 2006. Hong Kong's new International airport at Chek Lap Kok was opened on 6th July 1998. More opportunities will be given to Hong Kong. The rapid growth of economic environment, development in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen and the growing of Mainland China traffic have created a great threat to Hong Kong International Airport. This dissertation aims to provide a review of Hong Kong's air cargo industry, the competitive factor of Hong Kong International Airport as an air cargo industry in the Asia Pacific Region and competition, coordination and co-operation to the Pearl River Delta. It will also suggest strategies for strengthening Hong Kong's air cargo industry as the leading hub and express cargo hub in Asia. i DOI: 10.5353/th_b3963443 Subjects: Aeronautics, Commercial - China - Hong Kong - Freight

Abstract: Abstract of Dissertation entitled "Air Cargo Industry in Hong Kong" Submitted by So Miu Sang For the degree of Master of Art in Transport Policy and Planning at the University of Hong Kong in June 2004 Given the excellent geographic and strategic location of the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), cargo has become one of the important industries in Hong Kong's overall economy. Hong Kong's market has seen a remarkable growth. It has averaged 11.2% per annum growth since 1992 and exceeded 2.6 million tones in 2003. The opening of Hong th Kong's new airport at Chek Lap Kok on 6 July 1998 marked a significant improvement in the quality and capacity of Hong Kong's aviation facilities, paving the way for a strong growth in passenger and cargo traffic. It has strengthened Hong Kong's position as an air cargo hub in the Asia Pacific Region and as the gateway to China. Moreover, under the "One Country, Two System" arrangement, Hong Kong is highly conducive to closer economic partnership with the Chinese Mainland. More opportunities will be given to Hong Kong. However, the rapid change of economic environment, development of new airports in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and Asia Region's airports and the growing of Mainland China traffic have created a great threat to Hong Kong International Airport. This dissertation aims to provide a review of Hong Kong's air cargo industry and the development trends in the industry, and to analyze the competitive edge of Hong Kong International Airport as an air cargo hub in the Asia Pacific Region as well as the Pearl River Delta. It will also suggest strategies for strengthening Hong Kong's position as the leading hub and express cargo hub in Asia. Abstract: To analysis whether the Macau International Airport (MIA) can be a supplementary freight runway for the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), this paper provides an overview of the airport system regarding air freight in Hong Kong and Macau. The paper is done in the context of operational, managerial and institutional. Through understanding the nature of air freight and multi-airport system, this paper will deeply analyze the transport connection network in between Hong Kong and Macau and in between the HKIA and the MIA and this paper found that the existing poor transport connection network in between Hong Kong and Macau largely affect the MIA as a successful supplementary freight runway for the HKIA. Beside, through analyzing the airlines and freight forwarders' choice on airports in between HKIA and MIA and the inter-relationship in between airport, airport operators, airlines and freight forwarders/shippers, this paper found that the HKIA has absolute advantage over the MIA. Thus, the finding of the paper concluded that an efficient inter-modal aircrafts' equipments system in between Hong Kong and Macau must be built. And, a single joint company managed and operated by Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) and CAM should be set up to take in charge on MIA in order to allocate supplementary air freight from the HKIA to the MIA. Book Hong Kong Takes Flight

Download or read book Hong Kong Takes Flight written by John D. Wong and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercial aviation took shape in Hong Kong as the city developed into a powerful economy. Rather than accepting air travel as an inevitability in the era of global mobility, John Wong argues that Hong Kong’s development into a regional and global airline hub was not preordained. By underscoring the shifting process through which this hub emerged, Hong Kong Takes Flight aims to describe globalization and global networks in the making. Viewing the globalization of the city through the prism of its airline industry, Wong examines how policymakers and businesses asserted themselves against international partners and competitors in a bid to accrue socioeconomic benefits, negotiated their interests in Hong Kong’s economic success, and articulated their expressions of modernity.

Abstract: Currently, most of the research related to aviation sector of Hong Kong would focus on infrastructure perspective such as the building of 3rd runway in HKIA and the cooperation issues among airports in Pearl River Delta (PRD) Region in order to analyze the impact towards competitiveness of Hong Kong as a major international air cargo hub. However, there are not much research on air cargo industry has been done from security perspective but the recent trend of tightening international security requirement has already brought significant impact on the competitiveness of Hong Kong air logistics sector. In fact, the United States enacted the Aviation and Transportation Security Act (ATSA) after the 9/11 incident in 2001 already signaled a new era in air cargo transportation. Significant security measures have been implemented to all facilities shipping cargo to the United States and air cargo sector in Hong Kong would be included. Since most of the international air cargo that enters the United States transits through large hub facilities in Asia such as Hong Kong, there is a strong air cargo network linkage between Hong Kong and the United States. This study aims to understand the major development of international air cargo security requirement and the consequences for Hong Kong air cargo industry. This study also examines challenges of the requirement on Hong Kong air cargo industry from operational and economic perspective. An in-depth interview would be conducted to obtain industrial insights on developing recommendations on fulfilling the requirement in a cost-effective manner. This study would act as a stepping stone for further analysis on providing recommendations to facilitate the security requirement development in Hong Kong air cargo industry.
