Download or read book An Analysis of the Egyptian Mythology written by James Cowles Prichard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Analysis of the Egyptian Mythology: To Which Is Subjoined, a Critical Examination of the Remains of Egyptian Chronology The motive which originally induced me to enter on the inquiries contained in the following work was the desire to elucidate, through the mythology of the ancient Egyptians, the relations of that people to other branches of the human family. The arts and the literature of Egypt appear to have been the produce of the country and its peculiar possession: they display no indications of foreign origin and improvement. The language and the physical characters of the people are likewise peculiar and strongly distinguished from those belonging to other races of men. Even many parts of the Egyptian mythology, like the poetical fictions of the Greeks and the Hindoos, bore an evident relation to the local features and physical conditions of the region where they were invented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Interpreting Ancient Egyptian Narratives, Martin Pehal applies structural analysis to four New Kingdom narrative compositions. The study explains the strong configurational character of ancient Egyptian (mythological) thought which has the ability to connect various ontological levels of human experience with the surrounding world into complex synchronic structures. These symbolical systems are shown to be mediating between the various cultural paradoxes which were inherent to ancient Egyptian society...

Book The Search for God in Ancient Egypt

Download or read book The Search for God in Ancient Egypt written by Jan Assmann and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First English-language edition, with revisions and additions by the author. This classic work by one of the world's most distinguished Egyptologists was first published in German in 1984. The Search for God in Ancient Egypt offers a distillation of Jan Assmann's views on ancient Egyptian religion, with special emphasis on theology and piety. Deeply rooted in the texts of ancient Egypt and thoroughly informed by comparative religion, theology, anthropology, and semiotic analysis, Assmann's interpretations reveal the complexity of Egyptian thought in a new way.Assmann takes special care to distinguish between the "implicit" theology of Egyptian polytheism and the "explicit" theology that is concerned with exploring the problem of the divine. His discussion of polytheism and mythology addresses aspects of ritual, the universe, and myth; his consideration of explicit theology deals with theodicy and the specifics of Amarna religion.

Book The Complete Gods and Godesses of Ancient Egypt

Download or read book The Complete Gods and Godesses of Ancient Egypt written by Richard H Wilkinson and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the deities of ancient Egypt: their origins and their central role in the lives of the Egyptian people Worshipped for over three-fifths of recorded history, Egypt’s gods and goddesses are among the most fascinating of human civilization. The lives of pharaohs and commoners alike were dominated by the need to honor, worship, and pacify the huge pantheon of deities, from the benevolent to the malevolent. The richness and complexity of their mythology is reflected in countless tributes throughout Egypt, from lavish tomb paintings and imposing temple reliefs to humble household shrines. This book examines the evolution, worship, and eventual decline of the numerous gods and goddesses—from minor household figures such as Bes and Tawaret to the all-powerful deities Amun and Re—that made Egypt the most theocratic society of the ancient world, and made Egyptians, according to Herodotus, “more religious than any other people.” Now available in paperback, with hundreds of illustrations and specially commissioned drawings, this title remains the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to the deities that lay at the heart of Egyptian religion and society.

Book The Egyptian God Tutu

    Book Details:
  • Author : Olaf E. Kaper
  • Publisher : Peeters Publishers
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9789042912175
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book The Egyptian God Tutu written by Olaf E. Kaper and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tutu (Tithoes) was a popular god in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods of Egyptian history, with his origins in the earlier Egyptian religious tradition. The god provided protection against demons, and his appearance as a striding sphinx was often combined with symbols of his power and visual references to demons and other divinities. The god Tutu demonstrates the continuing vitality of the pharaonic religion under the pressure of foreign cultures and ideas. This monograph provides the first comprehensive study of the god Tutu. It is based upon a collection of attestations, largely unpublished, which derive from monuments in various parts of Egypt and from museum collections all over the world. Moreover, the results of recent archaeological field work in Shenhur and in the temple of Tutu in the Dakhla Oasis have been included in full. The catalogue of monuments is accompanied by an analysis of the god Tutu, his iconography and his place in the Egyptian religion.
