Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Project Independence? The sources and uses of energy in the United States have changed dramatically in the last several decades. As a result, in just one generation, we have shifted from a position of domestic energy abundance to a substantial and continually growing reliance on foreign energy sources. Project Independence is a wide-ranging program to evaluate this growing dependence on foreign sources of energy, and to develop positive programs to reduce our vulnerability to future oil cut-offs and price increases.

Book The European Union and Supranational Political Economy

Download or read book The European Union and Supranational Political Economy written by Riccardo Fiorentini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial crisis – originated in 2008 in the United States – had a dramatic impact on the world economy. The European Union was immediately involved, but its reaction to the crisis was clearly inadequate. The misgovernment of the European economy not only put at risk the European Monetary Union, but it also caused further hindrances to the recovery of the global economy. The global financial turmoil shook deep-rooted beliefs. The doctrine of international neo-liberalism is more and more criticized. Nevertheless, the critics of neo-liberalism focus their attention on the relationship between the state and the market, as if the nation states, with their international organisations, have enough power for an effective global governance of the world economy. The model of European supranational integration, though seriously imperfect, can suggest some new way out from the crisis – even at the world level – based on a new relationship between the supranational government of the Union and the market. In this book, several academic disciplines are involved: international economics, international political economy, international law, international relations, political theory and democratic theory. Adopting such a multidisciplinary theoretical perspective, the volume tries to answer the following question: Is a more supranational Europe able to provide a better government of the EMU? Does this reform involve more European democracy?

Book Trailblazers in Economics

Download or read book Trailblazers in Economics written by Mathew Forstater and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our increasingly interconnected world, economics has become an ever more powerful, integrated, and dynamic force. In other words, what happens in Vegas doesn't stay there anymore. In fact, decisions made by economists in London or Shanghai may well determine the fate of savings accounts for people in Montreal, Manhattan, and Mogadishu. As economics is an admittedly complicated social science, this book uses biography as a teaching tool-profiling the most important economists-because often the best way to begin understanding a complicated and important field is by reading about the people behind the ideas.

Book Models of Economic Liberalization

Download or read book Models of Economic Liberalization written by Sebastián Etchemendy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to explain the variation in the models of economic liberalization across Ibero-America in the last quarter of the twentieth century, and the legacies they produced for the current organization of the political economies. Although the macroeconomics of effective market adjustment evolved in a similar way, the patterns of compensation delivered by neoliberal governments and the type of actors in business and the working class that benefited from them were remarkably different. Etchemendy argues that the most decisive factors that shape adjustment paths are the type of regime and the economic and organizational power with which business and labor emerged from the inward-oriented model. The analysis spans from the origins of state, business and labor industrial actors in the 1930s and 1940s to the politics of compensation under neoliberalism across the Ibero-American world, combined with extensive field work material on Spain, Argentina and Chile.
