Book excerpt: Presenting state-of-the-art research on the economics of producing and marketing aquacultural products, this volume addresses critical issues concerning profitability, market acceptance, and economic modeling of various aquacultural products. Research approaches range from firm-level bioeconomic modelling to market-level econometric modelling of industry growth and product substitution. The studies highlight the institutional structures and public policy issues that will shape growth and development of aquaculture into the twenty-first century, including trade policies, food safety, and environmental quality.

Book Striped Bass and Other Morone Culture

Download or read book Striped Bass and Other Morone Culture written by R.M. Harrell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-05-23 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an up-to-date discussion of the culture of striped bass and other Morone spp. The subject matter is broken down into functional components of the spawning, husbandry, and economics of the industry, and is written by some of the leading scientists in each of the respective areas of discussion. The chapters on reproduction, nutrition, environmental requirements, transportation, economics and fish processing are not found anywhere else in the striped bass literature. The chapter on water quality takes a very non-traditional approach to considering the impact water quality has on the production success of Morone and offers some very thought-provoking ideas on water management.Primarily written as a reference work, this book is intended to complement existing technique manuals.

Book Economic Potential of Aquaculture in Dredged Material Containment Areas

Download or read book Economic Potential of Aquaculture in Dredged Material Containment Areas written by Kenneth Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains more than 400 ports and more than 25,000 miles of coastal and inland waterways. Many harbors and navigation channels silt up and require maintenance dredging to be kept open. Estimates of the amount of sediment dredged by the Corps of Engineers range from 300-400 million cubic yards annually. Disposal in dredged material containment areas (DMCAs) suits the needs of many dredging projects. On the national level, an estimated 7,000 acres of new DMCAs are needed annually. In many parts of the country, finding and acquiring suitable sites is difficult. Research by the Corps of Engineers identified aquaculture as a potential beneficial use of containment areas. By designing and operating a DMCA for both material placement and aquaculture, benefits could be realized by the landowner, the aquaculture industry, local port and waterway authorities, and the Corps of Engineers. The focus of this report is an introduction to aquacultural economics as it pertains to dredged material containment areas"--National Sea Grant Library publication website
