This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Analysis of Sources of Information on the Population of the Navaho There has been no standardized definition Of Indian suitable for all purposes. It is quite evident that several ideas are involved in this word. There is the idea of biological descent or degree Of blood as a definite something which makes a person an Indian. This something would be generally based on personal appearance plus local records such as the reservation or tribal roll containing the name of the person and his degree Of blood or those of his parents or other relatives. Further, there is the cultural element, illustrated in the ability to speak an Indian language or by the person's participating in the customs and culture of some recognized Indian group, such as Indian arts and crafts or taking an active part in the tribal ceremonies. Finally, there is the legal Indian who is owner or part owner Of restricted property and a member of some tribal group holding such property. Book Unregulated Water Source on the Navajo Nation

Download or read book Unregulated Water Source on the Navajo Nation written by Scott Jefferey Fennema and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Navajo Nation is the largest federally granted area given to Native American people in the United States, with more than 300,000 federally recognized Navajo tribal members. Approximately 58% of the people living on the Navajo Nation do not have access to public utilities, including treated drinking water (EPA 2010). Without access to drinking water sources that meet the requirements of the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, rural residents use unregulated water sources, such as windmill driven wells designed to supply water for livestock. Approximately 30% of the population use unregulated supplies because they are not connected to the public water supply and 29% of people haul water from unregulated supplies even though they are connected to the public water supply (NNEPA 2011). From 2008 until 2011, students from Diné College and University of Nevada, Reno sampled unregulated water supplies in 11 Chapters located within the Northern Navajo region. 10% of the stock tank wells had naturally occurring uranium and 40% had arsenic concentrations that exceeded the federal maximum contaminant level (MCL) for drinking water. Nearly 80% of these sources were also contaminated with bacteria. Based on sampling results for arsenic and uranium, and an analysis of census data, approximately 5,000 people have a high likelihood of using contaminated unregulated sources as a drinking water supply. Although the analysis identified areas where unregulated water source use is highly likely, this has not been verified with a survey of residents. This study provides guidance for (a) educational efforts to inform residents of the potential risks associated with drinking water from unregulated sources, (b) construction of watering points by the Navajo Nation Tribal Utilities Authority and (c) setting priorities for hauling tankers of treated water periodically to chapters included in this study.

Book Native Americans and the Criminal Justice System

Download or read book Native Americans and the Criminal Justice System written by Jeffrey Ian Ross and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This collection presents significant summaries of past criminal behavior, and significant new cultural and political contextualizations that provide greater understanding of the complex effects of crime, sovereignty, culture, and colonization on crime and criminalization on Indian reservations.' Duane Champagne, UCLA (From the Foreword) Native Americans and the Criminal Justice System offers a comprehensive approach to explaining the causes, effects, and solutions for the presence and plight of Native Americans in the criminal justice system. Articles from scholars and experts in Native American issues examine the ways in which society's response to Native Americans is often socially constructed. The contributors work to dispel the myths surrounding the crimes committed by Native Americans and assertions about the role of criminal justice agencies that interact with Native Americans. In doing so, the contributors emphasize the historical, social, and cultural roots of Anglo European conflicts with Native peoples and how they are manifested in the criminal justice system. Selected chapters also consider the global and cross-national ramifications of Native Americans and crime. This book systematically analyzes the broad nature of the subject area, including unique and emerging problems, theoretical issues, and policy implications.
