Book excerpt: A theoretical and experimental investigation was conducted to determine a method for predicting the starting pressure ratio for a zerosecondary-flow ejector system having a secondthroat diffuser. The effects of second-throat contraction, location, and length on the ejector starting characteristics were investigated, and a method for predicting second-throat diffuser performance was developed using one-dimensional conservation equations. A comparsion of both hot and cold flow data with the developed theory is obtained for both long and short second-throat diffusers. For example, the short second-throat theory deviated from the short second-throat experimental data by a maximum of 10.2 percent with an average deviation of 3.3 percent. (Author).

The improved theory involves a more accurate technique for determining ramp pressure. The new technique utilizes the flow field approaching the second throat along with two-dimensional oblique shock relations and the conservation equations to determine the conditions at the throat entrance. The results are applied to second-throat diffusers with throat lengths varying from 0.2 to 8.1 throat diameters and to second throats with a center-body located at various positions.

Eight annular nozzles with various geometrics, including one expansion-deflection (E- D) nozzle, were tested in cylindrical diffusers having various diffuser lengths. The ejector starting and pumping characteristics were compared and found similar to the empirical relations developed for ejectors having conventional convergent-divergent nozzles. The unique problems associated with simulated altitude testing of the E-D nozzle and the effects of ejector diffuser design on E-D nozzle performance are discussed. A method is described for determining the ejector pumping characteristics when the ejector is unstarted to satisfy the annular nozzle test requirement for altitude simulation at conditions other than minimum cell pressure.
