Book Finding a New Midwestern History

Download or read book Finding a New Midwestern History written by Jon K. Lauck and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In comparison to such regions as the South, the far West, and New England, the Midwest and its culture have been neglected both by scholars and by the popular press. Historians as well as literary and art critics tend not to examine the Midwest in depth in their academic work. And in the popular imagination, the Midwest has never really ascended to the level of the proud, literary South; the cultured, democratic Northeast; or the hip, innovative West Coast. Finding a New Midwestern History revives and identifies anew the Midwest as a field of study by promoting a diversity of viewpoints and lending legitimacy to a more in-depth, rigorous scholarly assessment of a large region of the United States that has largely been overlooked by scholars. The essays discuss facets of midwestern life worth examining more deeply, including history, religion, geography, art, race, culture, and politics, and are written by well-known scholars in the field such as Michael Allen, Jon Butler, and Nicole Etcheson.

Book The Miami Indians of Indiana

Download or read book The Miami Indians of Indiana written by Stewart Rafert and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now scattered in small communities in northern Indiana, the Eastern Miami Indians, once a well-known tribe, have lived in undeserved obscurity since the 1840s. In recent years they have become more visible as they have sought restoration of treaty rights and have revitalized their culture. The post-removal history of the Indiana Miami tribe is a rich texture of social, legal, and economic history, much enhanced by folklore and a rich series of photographic images. In The Miami Indians of Indiana: A Persistent People, 1654–1994, Rafert explores the history and culture of the Miami Indians.

Book The Old South s Modern Worlds

Download or read book The Old South s Modern Worlds written by L. Diane Barnes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old South has traditionally been portrayed as an insular and backward-looking society. The Old South's Modern Worlds looks beyond this myth to identify some of the many ways that antebellum southerners were enmeshed in the modernizing trends of their time. The essays gathered in this volume not only tell unexpected narratives of the Old South, they also explore the compatibility of slavery-the defining feature of antebellum southern life-with cultural and material markers of modernity such as moral reform, cities, and industry. Considered as proponents of American manifest destiny, for example, antebellum southern politicians look more like nationalists and less like separatists. Though situated within distinct communities, Southerners'-white, black, and red-participated in and responded to movements global in scope and transformative in effect. The turmoil that changes in Asian and European agriculture wrought among southern staple producers shows the interconnections between seemingly isolated southern farms and markets in distant lands. Deprovincializing the antebellum South, The Old South's Modern Worlds illuminates a diverse region both shaped by and contributing to the complex transformations of the nineteenth-century world.

Book Index to 1850 United States Federal Census of Indiana

Download or read book Index to 1850 United States Federal Census of Indiana written by Indiana State Library Genealog Division and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Index to 1850 United States Federal Census of Indiana: Letters O-P-Q The indexing of the federal 1850 population census of Indiana was begun in 1950. It required five years to complete. Only heads of families and persons of a different surname than the head of household were indexed. Indexing was all done from the first positive film copies made by the National Archives. The microfilm was dim and in many instances entire pages were illegible. Some of these pages were later checked with the original books in the National Archives, Washington, D.C. Page numbers are for the most part the handwritten continuous paging given in the upper right hand corner of the film. Indexing of the microfilm was done by the staff of the Genealogy Division and Mrs. Ruth Slevin was the principal transcriber. None of this indexing was double checked. Alphabetizing of the 3 by 5 cards was per formed by numerous staff members of the Division over the years. This alphabetizing was also not checked and consequently there are errors. In 1969, the Public Library of Fort Wayne and Allen County contracted with the Indiana State Library to have the 3 by 5 cards typed. In addition to financing the typing of this project, the Fort Wayne Library was permitted typed copies for their own library use.
