Book From Coastal Wilderness to Fruited Plain

Download or read book From Coastal Wilderness to Fruited Plain written by Gordon G. Whitney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-08-29 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Coastal Wilderness to Fruited Plain is an account of the making of a large part of the American landscape following European settlement. Drawing upon land survey records and early travellers' accounts, Dr Whitney reconstructs the 'virgin' forests and grasslands of the north-eastern and central United States during the pre-settlement period. He then documents successively the clearance and fragmentation of the region's woodlands, the harvest of the forest and its game, the ploughing of the prairies, and the draining of wetlands. The degree to which these activities altered the soil, climate, plant and animal communities, and water cycle are evaluated, and the sustainability of present-day ecosystems is brought into question in this account.

Book The Timber Resources of Vermont Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Timber Resources of Vermont Classic Reprint written by Neal P. Kingsley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Resources of Vermont A resurvey of the timber resources in Vermont was made in 1965 and 1966 by the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, approximately 18 years after the initial forest survey. In this resurvey, as in the initial survey, the Northeastern Station received cooperation from the Vermont Department of Forests and Parks. The Department purchased the aerial photographs of the entire state that were used for the re survey and gathered information on the output of timber products. State field crews remeasured initial forest survey plots and established new plots on all State forest land. Personnel of the Green Mountain National Forest car ried out the part of the survey on National forest land. This report summarizes the timber-resource situation and the changes that have taken place since the initial sur vey. Trends in the supply of timber for forest-based indus tries are pointed out and projections of future timber supply are made. In this resurvey, a portion of the initial ground plots was remeasured to provide estimates of net annual timber growth and estimates of land-use change and to update the initial forest inventory volume. New ground plots were established for an independent second estimate. These two sets of estimates were weighted and combined to give the current estimates of forest area and timber volume. Sampling errors, which indicate reliability, are shown for most of the totals of the breakdowns of the new esti mates. Users of these resource data are cautioned to read carefully the definitions of terms and the section pertain ing to the reliability of the estimates in the appendix. Book A History of the Lumber Industry in the State of New York Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Lumber Industry in the State of New York From the time when the pioneers first swung their axes in the primeval forests of New York, lumbermen have been closely connected with the industrial progress and development of the State. The first settler was the first lumberman; and his work commenced when he felled the trees to make a clearing in the forest for his cabin and his crops. Although this use of the ax alone would hardly constitute lumbering as understood to-day, still it was not many years until a sawmill appeared in each settlement and the lumber industry was formally inaugurated. Of necessity, the first colonists went without sawmills longer than the later ones. They made rough lumber for their houses, barns, and fences with their axes, supplemented at times by saws, large and small, worked by hand-power. But in the later settlements, which in the beginning of the last century included three-fourths of the State, a sawmill was built in each locality within ten or fifteen years after the first family moved in. In many instances the sawmill preceded the gristmill; and in a few places the erection of the mill antedated the advent of the first settlers.
