However, formal guidance and techniques to accurately determine an organization's microcomputer requirements are general in nature and not easily applied. The objective of this research study was to identify the primary microcomputer requirements of the base-level supply account, as perceived by the supply community, in terms of the numbers of microcomputers needed and their placement within the organizational structure. A survey of 30 Management and Systems Officers was conducted resulting in a descriptive analysis of the current microcomputer status of base-level supply accounts in terms of the numbers of microcomputers in use, their placement in the organization, and specific applications in use. Book excerpt: Microcomputer based database management systems can reduce training times and error rates on administrative tasks. Workers in many organizations could use the assistance of a microcomputer-based management information system. However, adequate system design and development requires an in-depth knowledge of the tasks to be automated, and can require hundreds, even thousands, of hours to complete. Often, technicians assigned to a work area do not have the knowledge or time to devote to the design and development of an information system. One such work area is the Equipment Management Section in the Air Force base supply organization. The purpose of this study was to apply principles of database management to the management of equipment items, with the ultimate goal being a reduction in error rates and training times. The study was conducted using the seven stages of information systems design discussed in Analysis and Design of Information Systems by Senn. These stages require a thorough examination of the problem and problem environment prior to design and development of the information system. Accordingly, five research questions designed to help the researcher gain a thorough understanding of the Equipment Management Section and the environment in which it functions were asked and answered. Then, a management information system was designed, developed, and tested. The management information system is called the Equipment Management Information System (EMIS). (KR).

Book excerpt: This document discusses USAF policy and management procedures for acquiring and fielding standard communications computer systems. A review of current Air Force base-level conditions is made to assess the impact of functionals acquiring and fielding unique computer systems through the standard systems contracts and current acquisition process. An analysis of the Air Force acquisition and Life-Cycle Management process is made to assess the viability of existing AF Regulations 700 and 800 toward achieving maximum efficiencies from Life-Cycle practices. A further examination of the Air Force organizational structure is made to determine deficiencies and to make recommendations. The lack of architecture, central authority, and adherence to existing Life-Cycle Management policy causes a fragmented approach to acquiring, controlling, intergrating, and providing Life-Cycle Management for communications-computer systems in the Air Force. Conclusions are drawn to assist in overcoming these deficiencies. (kr).
