For Canadian international education, China is a huge potential market. Unfortunately, we know very little about the motivations and perceptions of Mainland Chinese students when they choose Canada to pursue their higher education. Compared to other studies, this study focuses on pre-departure experiences of Mainland Chinese students. This is a small-scale inquiry and eight Mainland Chinese students were interviewed. The participants' narratives provide rich data to answer the question of why Mainland Chinese students choose to study in Canada. This thesis also examines influential factors that affect Mainland Chinese students' decision-making processes. The findings illustrate that there were three main factors that motivated the interviewees to study abroad. First, the participants chose to study abroad because of the lack of opportunity to get a high-quality education in China and the fierce competition for admission into top universities. Second, the participating students and their families believed that the high-quality of education in Western countries could bring competitive career advantages. Finally, parental involvement worked as a key factor. This study also demonstrates that parents and study abroad agencies were two main factors that influenced the participants' decision to study in Canada over other countries. This study provides useful data and insights for Canadian institutions to gain a deeper understanding of Mainland Chinese students and enhance their recruitment strategies.

Book excerpt: In order to promote Canadian students’ mobility to China, it is essential to understand their motivations to study in Chinese universities because it influences their learning experiences. Through the application of the push-pull model as a conceptual framework (Altbach, 1998; Mazzarol & Soutar, 2002), this study explores the factors that motivate Canadian exchange students to study in China. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 non-Chinese spoken Canadian exchange students from 9 universities. The findings reveal that both push and pull factors affect students’ decisions to study in China. The key push factors are learning the Chinese language and culture and personal growth; the primary pull factors are China’s potential for economic development, future opportunities, and the availability of exchange programs. This study provides stakeholders with insights into designing exchange programs targeted to students’ needs and developing marketing strategies to attract Canadian international students

Drawing on an empirical study based on interviews with 51 students, this book investigates how macro political/economic factors, institutional influences, parental influence, and students’ personal motivations have shaped students’ eventual choice of university. Building on Perna’s integrated model of college choice and Lee’s push-pull mobility model, this book conceptualizes that students’ border crossing from Hong Kong to Mainland China for higher education is a trans-contextualized negotiated choice under the "One Country, Two Systems" principle. The findings reveal that during the decision-making process, influencing factors have conditioned four archetypes of student choice: Pragmatists, Achievers, Averages, and Underachievers. The book closes by proposing an enhanced integrated model of college choice that encompasses both rational motives and sociological factors, and examines the theoretical significance and practical implications of the qualitative study. Book excerpt: Academic mobility and migration of knowledge workers are two concerns in international migration studies, so how academic mobility transforms into immigration has received much attention as well. There are two commonly held approaches to the explanation of immigration of international students: the classic Push and Pull theory and its derivative studies as well as Rational Choice Theory (RCT). However, both sets of theories have their drawbacks, that their analysis is either exclusion of the micro-level decision-making process or neglect of the macro-level social structure. In this study, both qualitative and quantitative data are collected, and Giddens structuration theory has been applied to mediate micro and macro level factors for constructing a framework to understand migration motivations of Chinese undergraduate students in Canada. The major conceptions and themes drawn upon from structuration theory include agency and structure, the effects of rules and resources within structures, the capacity and knowledgeability of agent, time-space context, and the theme of duality of structure. Because gender differences are significant in this study, two models are built for female and male students respectively. The practical aim of this study is to generate more policy interests in Canada in Chinese undergraduate students in order to make Canada the foremost destination for them not only for studying abroad but also for settlement.

Book excerpt: Students from Mainland China are the largest international group in both United States and Canada, and their numbers have grown substantially. The influx of Chinese students has contributed to American and Canadian higher education institutions academically, financially, and culturally. However, due to rapid changes of social, cultural and political contexts in both home and host countries, new patterns of student mobility arise. Especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, higher education institutions in US and Canada need to understand international students' needs and prepare better to attract and serve international students. My dissertation employed interviews to explore in-depth perspectives from students within the tradition of qualitative research. I conducted in-depth and semi-structured interviews with 55 Chinese undergraduate students, 21 of them at Cheer University in the US and 34 of them at Tree University in Canada. My study shows that Chinese students' college choices were mainly influenced by push factors - by Gaokao and by the type of secondary education that developed in China under Gaokao. In addition, studying abroad was not only about knowledge or degree. It was also about with experiences, such as broadened views and skills. In this sense, middle-class families invested not only in knowledge and degrees, but also in the experiences of living abroad. Parents and their children strongly believed that the entire process is to their advantage in the future when they are compared to people who did not study abroad. Recommendations are made for both universities and future young Chinese people who want to study abroad.

This thesis explores how Mainland Chinese international students, especially those who are from one-child households, maintain their familial responsibilities while studying in Canada away from home. The research is framed by the family migration strategy literature and empirically adopts a qualitative approach. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews with Mainland Chinese international students are undertaken. The findings show that as with many other types of migration, student migration, in this case, is a familial decision. To a certain extent, obtaining a foreign degree is the foundation for fulfilling familial responsibilities in the future. In addition, a new concept, delay remittances, is introduced as a way of conceptualizing the concrete meaning of familial responsibility for Mainland Chinese international students. The findings also show that the most significant tension for Mainland Chinese international is related to the uncertainty of how and where they will be able to fulfill their familial obligations to their parents.

Book excerpt: The potential of the Chinese outbound tourism market is substantial; however, research on this market to Canada is limited. This may be due, in part, to the lack of Approved Destination Status (ADS). This study examined the possible perceived image of Canada obtained by potential Chinese tourists, and to compare to the marketing position of Canada by CTC China Division-in effect, to conduct a product-market match between two concepts. Content analysis and an importance and performance analysis were used in the study. A questionnaire distributed at the Beijing Capital International Airport solicited perceptions of tourism in Canada, importance of selected attributes in travel decision making, performance of selected attributes on Canada, and trip preferences. The marketing position of Canada was examined through a content analysis of the promotional materials circulated from CTC China Division in Beijing, China. The coherences and gaps between perceived image of Canada and marketing position of Canada provide some marketing implications. This study concludes that the general tourism image of Canada is vague but positive, which is probably derived from the historically favorable image of Canada in china. Potential Chinese tourists had little knowledge on specific tourism sights; however, they recognized star attractions of Vancouver, Niagara Falls, and Toronto. Potential Chinese tourists prefer slow-paced trips; group tours; two weeks in length; in fall season; featuring mid-budget accommodation, preferably bed-and-breakfasts; on motor coach; visiting nature based sights at majority; and providing foods of various cultures. The current marketing position of Canada reflected through promotional materials by CTC and its partners has coherences in promoting tourism attractions in Canada to the image of Canada. Gaps exist on the promotion of travel issues and unconventional attractions, which inspires the marketing implications. Promotional resources should be allocate to unconventional tourism attractions with consideration rather than the presence of Chinese and mandarin speaking environment in Canada because of Chinese tourists' demand for culture diversity. Promotion should include more information about travel expense and visas to establish reasonable consumer expectations.
