Book Errors in English Pronunciation among Arabic Speakers

Download or read book Errors in English Pronunciation among Arabic Speakers written by Mohamed Fathy Khalifa and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contrastive analysis of Arabs’ errors in English pronunciation regarding segmentals—consonants, consonant clusters, and vowels—and suprasegmentals—main word stress. It also explains the main interlingual reasons behind these errors, and presents some teaching suggestions for surmounting them. The findings show that the subjects substitute their own Arabic sounds for unfamiliar English ones, producing incorrect English sounds. In addition, they apply Arabic main word stress rules instead of English ones, producing incorrect English stress patterns. The book also shows that English sounds and stress patterns that are both different and more marked than corresponding Arabic ones caused learning difficulties for the subjects.

This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first dedicated to the growing field of theory and research on second language processing and parsing. The fourteen papers in this volume offer cutting-edge research using a number of different languages (e.g., Arabic, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, English) and structures (e.g., relative clauses, wh-gaps, gender, number) to examine various issues in second language processing: first language influence, whether or not non-natives can achieve native-like processing, the roles of context and prosody, the effects of working memory, and others. The researchers include both established scholars and newer voices, all offering important insights into the factors that affect processing and parsing in a second language.

Book The Pronunciation of English by Speakers of Other Languages

Download or read book The Pronunciation of English by Speakers of Other Languages written by Radek Skarnitzl and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on an increasingly attractive, yet controversial topic of non-native accentedness in speech. The contributors here are aware of the fact that the mechanisms and effects of pronunciation are far too complex to allow for strong and definite claims of any sort, but present research leading to useful answers to relevant questions. The book contributes to the deeper understanding of many aspects of foreign-accented English with reference to clearly described empirical evidence. The volume brings together fourteen chapters organized into four subdivisions, covering conceptual and perceptual issues, questions of segmental and suprasegmental pronunciation features, and methodological and didactic recommendations. As such, it provides a cross-sectional view of the current phonetic and didactic empirical research into the pronunciation of non-native English.

Book Acquisition of Korean Obstruents by English speaking Second Language Learners of Korean and the Role of Pronunciation Instruction

Download or read book Acquisition of Korean Obstruents by English speaking Second Language Learners of Korean and the Role of Pronunciation Instruction written by Eun Sun Tark and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated how Korean second language (L2) learners whose first language (L1) is English acquire Korean obstruents, including stops, fricatives, and affricates, in word-initial position. It also explored how the similarities and differences between the L1 and the L2 affect L2 acquisition as well as the order of the acquisition of Korean obstruents by L2 learners. In addition, this study examined whether it is effective to teach the pronunciation of Korean obstruents to L2 learners of Korean through meaning oriented, form-focused instruction with corrective feedback. Ten English-speaking L2 Korean learners and ten Korean native speakers participated in the study. Korean L2 learners were classified into two groups: experimental and control group. Both groups took pre and post assessments (production and perception experiments). The experimental group participated in pronunciation training sessions (eight sessions/10 hours) and interviews in addition to the assessments. Acoustic analyses, statistical analyses, native speakers' judgmental analyses, and theme-based analyses were conducted to examine the L2 learners' acquisition of Korean obstruents (production and perception) and the role of pronunciation instruction. In terms of L2 acquisition, it was found that L2 learners perceived and produced aspirated stops/affricates better than tense and lenis ones, and they had the most difficulties with perceiving and producing lenis stops/affricates. Additionally, L2 learners perceived and produced tense fricatives better than lenis ones. In the case of the effectiveness of the pronunciation training, it was found that the L2 experimental group learners showed improvements in all stops, affricates, and fricatives in the post-test (perception and production) compared to the control group.

In Bangladesh, English is studied and increasingly spoken on daily basis by some people and it has emerged as a noticeable variety not necessarily in conformity with either British English or American English. It is a matter of regret that most of the secondary level students in our country are out of the touch of developing speaking skill in English. As a result, errors remain in spoken English. Most of the cases, errors are found in pronunciation and grammar which are the integral and integrated part of second or foreign language since it directly affects the speaker s communicative competence as well as performance. This research monograph reviews errors on phonological and grammatical aspects of spoken English with theoretical background and procedures of error analysis. It empirically through qualitative and quantitative method finds out the errors & reasons in pronunciation, articles, auxiliaries and prepositions. Finally, it provides some recommendations for effective remedial measures for developing spoken English in the light of the theoretical and empirical findings.

Book Second Language Acquisition and the Critical Period Hypothesis

Download or read book Second Language Acquisition and the Critical Period Hypothesis written by David Birdsong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1999 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Language Acquisition and the Critical Period Hypothesis is the only book on the market to provide a diverse collection of perspectives, from experienced researchers, on the role of the Critical Period Hypothesis in second language acquisition. It is widely believed that age effects in both first and second language acquisition are developmental in nature, with native levels of attainment in both to be though possible only if learning began before the closure of a "window of opportunity" – a critical or sensitive period. These seven chapters explore this idea at length, with each contribution acting as an authoritative look at various domains of inquiry in second language acquisition, including syntax, morphology, phonetics/phonology, Universal Grammar, and neurofunctional factors. By presenting readers with an evenly-balanced take on the topic with viewpoints both for and against the Critical Period Hypothesis, this book is the ideal guide to understanding this critical body of research in SLA, for students and researchers in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition.

Book Bridging the Gap

Download or read book Bridging the Gap written by Sylvie Lambert and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1994-07-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting has been a neglected area since the late 1970s. Sylvie Lambert and Barbara Moser-Mercer have attempted to give a new impulse to academic research in print with this collection of 30 articles discussing various aspects of interpreting grouped in 3 sections: I. Pedagogical issues, II. Simultaneous interpretation, III. Neuropsychological research.Being a professional interpreter may not be sufficient to explain what interpretation is all about and how it should be practised and taught. The purpose of this collection of reports on non-arbitrary, empirical research of simultaneous and sign-language interpretation, designed to bridge the gap between vocational and scientific aspects of an interpreter’s skills, is to show that the study of conference interpretation, by way of scientific experimental methods, as tedious and speculative as they may often appear, is bound to contribute significantly to general knowledge in this field and have tangible and practical repercussions. The contributors are specialists from all over the world. Introduction by Barbara Moser-Mercer.
