Book excerpt: We administered the Motivation Assessment Scale (MAS) and the Questions About Behavioral Function (QABF) to five raters and compared the results with functional analysis outcomes for 12 cases in which agreement was obtained for at least four out of five raters on either anecdotal assessment. The scores for functional categories on the MAS and QABF were ranked by averaging the scores for the raters who agreed on the primary maintaining variable. Functional analysis results were ranked by examining average responding across all conditions. A comparison showed correspondence between the highest category and the highest functional analysis condition for 10 out of 11 cases for the MAS and all 10 cases for the QABF. Correspondence for the category and condition ranked second was found for 2 out of 11 cases for the MAS and 2 out of 10 cases for the QABF. The magnitude of difference between categories on the MAS/QABF did not appear to predict the amount of difference in responding in the corresponding functional analyses.

Book excerpt: In applied behavior analysis functional assessment refers to the process of identifying the contingencies (functions) that maintain problem behavior. Successful behavioral intervention to decrease severe behavior problems in individuals with intellectual disability (ID) depends on our ability to accurately identify why a given individual engages in a specific behavior. The Functional Assessment for Multiple Causality (FACT), Functional Analysis Screening Tool (FAST), and Questions about Behavioral Function (QABF) are three commonly used third-party behavior rating instruments designed to evaluate the function of target behaviors, which have previously been shown to have acceptable levels of inter-rater reliability. This study examined whether inter-rater agreement was impacted by types of target behavior problems (Self-injurious Behavior, Stereotyped Behavior, and Aggressive/Destructive Behavior), frequency or severity of the target behavior, the assessment instrument, and how these factors interact. The sample consisted of 115 adults with ID with one or more problem behaviors. Each participant was assessed with all three instruments by two raters. Two separate univariate General Linear Model analyses were used to determine what contributes to the discrepancy in rater scores on each subscale. The predictors included the assessment instrument, type of target behavior, and either frequency or severity of the target behavior (separate models) along with all 2-way interactions. We found that severity of behavior is a significant predictor and that while frequency of behavior is not an individual predictor, it does interact with type of behavior to predict rater discrepancy scores.

The QABF was completed by two special education teachers and three paraprofessionals on fourteen students exhibiting problem behaviors. The elementary through high school age students in the study attended an alternative school for students with emotional and/or behavioral disorders (EBD). Teacher and paraprofessional test-retest reliability and inter-rater reliability were calculated for each of the students. Test-retest reliability was moderate to strong, but inter-rater reliability was low. Teacher test-retest reliability was higher than paraprofessionals. The results suggest the QABF may be a feasible behavioral assessment tool to develop a hypothesis of behavioral function or to guide further assessment for special education teachers with training in functional behavioral assessment procedures to use with students with EBD.

Book excerpt: The current study looked to compare and analyze the convergent validity of the Questions About Behavioral Function (QABF) with Trumpet Behavioral Health’s current form, the Functional Assessment Intake Form. Both forms were compared with results gathered from a functional analysis conducted on individuals with identified challenging behaviors (e.g. body dropping and self- injurious behaviors). A multi-element design was used to conduct a functional analysis, and identified functions from the indirect assessments were compared to the results found in the functional analysis. Results indicated that there was no correspondence between the indirect assessments used with the results from the functional analysis. Future research should focus on the validity of indirect assessments used and compare them with functional analyses to increase their validity when used in applied settings.

Among professionals and the lay public alike, there is little debate over the seriousness of self-injury, its detrimental effects, and the need for therapeutic intervention. At the same time, there are divergent views concerning its etiology and treat ment. Understanding the causes of self-injury, for example, requires an analysis of biological factors, socioenvironmental variables, communica tion competencies, and in complex clinical cases, the interrelationships among these influences. There is also uncertainty with regard to the function of self-injury. Put simply, why would people willingly inflict injury upon themselves? Finally, although there is little disagreement about the necessity to intervene for self-injury, clinicians do not make uniform therapeutic recommendations, and, in fact, considerable dif ferences in treatment selection are common. This fact is most apparent when one considers the ongoing controversy with regard to aversive and nonaversive programming. Our premise for this volume is that a greater understanding of self injurious behavior is dependent upon an empirical research base.
